Just got back from golf league, and noticed my OP 'recruiting perception' was deleted. It was not vile when I last viewed it. What happened?

I didn't see but my guess would be Penn State fans started flaming and rather than deleting the individual posts, someone deleted entire thread

Well GT, you shouldn't be too surprised...Even if it wasn't flamers...chances are the divisive Pitt fans would have caused that thread to be deleted anyway.

About that only safe conversation is talking about IPA's. Which I may start a thread on this as I am starting to turn my pallet in favor of them. Now I want MORE MORE MORE! (see, my feeble attempt to hijack your thread)

They all taste the same. Every IPA I've ever tasted has a citrus-grapefruit taste. It's like beer for people that want to drink beer but don't like the taste of beer.

LOL. Um....Not quite. I still love my regular beer, but IPA's are just a nice change of pace.

It is no different than tasting wine or bourbon. At first they might taste the same, but side by side you can teach your palate to differentiate them. If you are drinking IPAs after a Budweiser, they might taste similar. But if you try a Bell's Two Hearted next to a Brew Gentlemen General Braddock you can clearly tell the sharp floral taste of the former from the full juicy profile of the latter.

not a fan of my beer having a floral or a citrusy taste. they just come off as sweet, almost tart to me, but hey, to each his own.

in all honesty, I've been looking for a new beer, I am getting a tad tired of the same old watered down domestic pilsners. I go to these brew houses, try whatever and just not my cup of tea.. I do love a Smithwicks draft but very few distributors sell them and even when I find a 12 pack bottles, its' just not the same drinking at home, pouring it into a glass than straight from the tap..

Absolutely. Drink what you enjoy. If you are in Western PA there are a ton of options. IPAs, stoudts and sours are the craft beer darlings, because of their bold flavors. But there are a lot of just really good fresh quality beers being made in our area. Voodoo Killapilz is a nice step up from the traditional pilsner.

I have a cousin who is so afraid of Pittsburgh that her son is applying to UPG and UPJ but not Pitt. She is even afraid of Duquesne. Big cities are bad and scary for narrow-minded people.

Just discovered North Country Brewing in Slippery Rock. Great Food & Beer. I have seen some of their beers at Giant Eagle, so you don't even need to make the trek. Not sure if they make a Pilsner though. Haven't tried their Pilsner, but they have one. If you like Ambers, the Station 33 Firehouse Red is awesome.

Greensburg is safer than Pittsburgh?

I am not wild about their beer, but the food is good there and the hand-carved wood décor and fireplace are very welcoming. North Country did a lot to advance craft beer in the area. I always think of Penn Brewing, Church Brew Works, Valhalla and Foundry Ale Works as the four pioneers locally. John Harvard's fits in there somewhere too. But North Country and East End were that next wave that set the market in the early - mid 2000's.

For someone dipping their toe into craft beers, and not into IPAs, I would suggest trying a variety of Great Lakes beers. All are solid.

Kentucky bourbon barrel beer - http://www.kentuckyale.com/products/lexington-brewing-company/kentucky-bourbon-barrel-ale
This stuff is freaking fantastic for a strong ale that is off the norm.

Also, Ive had some scotch ales, they are also great... Old Chub from Oskar Blues Brewery you can find locally.

I give you these thoughts just because I felt the same as you, and really stopped drinking beer for awhile, then stumbled on these, and yummm..

I think the key is that UPG is not integrated into the surrounding community. I haven't been to UPG in years, but the campus was sort of removed from Greensburg out on Mt. Pleasant Road. Bums don't happen by to hit up the students for change. That doesn't mean that it is insulated from any crime, but that is the perception.

Yea but its not just that. Greensburg is not really viewed as a "city," rather a town. A town that has some problems but you don't hear about murders in Greensburg as much as Pittsburgh. Small-minded people think ALL of Pittsburgh is dangerous because its a city and crime happens in big cities.

I remember the PG ran a map of all Pgh murders one year and a WVU fan posted it and was asking how anyone could go to school there. As you would think all the murders where in the usual areas (Homewood, Manchester, Beltzhoover, Knoxville, et) which are about a million miles from Pitt it seems.

There are always going to be people afraid of cities for various reasons.

That's how many of these suburbanite softies end up at the cow college in the middle of the state!
