Does Pitt need the Golden Panthers to remain competitive?

I'm sure there are people on both sides of this, but I think we need them now more than ever. I know there are still booster groups associated with the program, but the deep pockets we had in the 70s and 80s seem to have been run off. I hope the new AD courts the wealthy donors and tries to bring them back into the fold. To be competitive, I think we are going to need them.
