Dokish

Love that adults can get so worked up over strangers having differing opinions on social media to the point where you get yourself banned.

I’ve been thrown out of every bar in the south side, was kicked out of a bar in DC before noon for tackling a guy who I thought I knew, was actually escorted out of a chili’s on a Saturday afternoon at 1pm in century 3 area and I still can’t understand how you get this immature on twitter.
That is awesome

It’s not “immature”

The banning now is mostly political. They don’t like people’s thoughts.

You’re mad at the people who got banned - I’m mad at the censors doing the banning. Using public infrastructure to try to force your agenda is wrong.

Do you also believe that power companies should be able to deny service based on who someone voted for?

Hey at least we still got Mike Vukovcan - similarly stubborn and arrogant, but on the complete opposite side politically (and boy does he love to bring it into Twitter, albeit mostly in likes and retweets).

There is enough politics in the news. Why can’t we keep political views at a minimum when discussing sports. Hopefully Chris will be out of detention by BB season

Twitter is not public infrastructure. It is a private company, and so can do as they please. I would prefer that they not ban people for speech they don't like, but it's not my, or your, call.

Which is dumb. He’s trying to build a business and turns off half of his potential customers. Peak is smart. Although he may have, I’ve never seen him show his cards regarding his politics. Although...Peak should tell his employees to do the same.

That post isn't dramatic at all.

my go to CFB sports source, i view him as a wonderful asset on the bleak sports journalism sources in pittsburgh

I can honestly state I will never give money to Vuk or Steigy jr because of this issue. I have no problem expressing your political viewpoints but they should do it on a non-Pitt account. Just my 2 cents.

Steigerwald is just a whack job. Vuk was pretty good until he wasn’t. All of his knowledge of silent commits and pestering kids in their DM’s became annoying. Hopefully he’s at least treating his employees better.

Like tonight both of their twitters are filled with disproved in five mins gateway pundit false stories on Kamala Harris and her schooling. Why? I mean I have both conservative and liberal beliefs on issues but their nonsense is such a turnoff to any good pitt content they might have.

I still follow Dokish's blog but he blocked me for suggesting Pitt would go 6-6 last year b/c i thought it would be a "rebuild" year and he quoted my tweet saying how outlandish it was and Ive been blocked since. Sucks because i enjoyed his tweets about the program. He might be the most knowledgeable Pitt insider other than Peak that we have.

yeah, I got the block hammer for saying it was hypocritical for him to criticize attendance when he doesn't attend anything in person. It's too bad since I would like to help defend when the PSU trolls go on the attack.

You’re wrong. Twitter absolutely uses public infrastructure but more importantly benefits from legal immunity to libel suits based on its status as a kind of “common carrier” and open forum.

It comes down to if you think that access to the public forum and services should be restricted based on someone’s opinion.

You too? What is wrong with this guy? That’s not normal behavior. I’d say that maybe his therapist told him that he should remove all negativity from his life...but he chooses to blog about pitt athletics for a living.

I’m with you, Swerv.

I’ve never understood why people take these message boards or social media so seriously?

Why would anyone get so upset with someone for not agreeing with them? That makes no sense.

+ I’ve had people send me really sad/alarming private messages.

+ I’ve had people try to Catfish me.

+ I’ve had people demanding to meet up so that we could fight.

+ I’ve had people try to have me banned.

+ Most often, I’ve had people - with no qualifications whatsoever - try to psychoanalyze me — always in a favorable light of course!

LOL!

Why would you do that? Seriously, what the hell is wrong with you?

It’s the same thing with politics. It’s okay for people to disagree with you. In fact, it’s really, really healthy for all concerned to be exposed to viewpoints that are different from yours. That’s how you grow!

That doesn’t mean you have to agree with them or keep your mouth shut. You can forcefully make your points as well. In fact, that’s what forums like this are for! Recruiting information, information on the team and college football in general and to exchange ideas with other people - typically intelligent people – with a shared passion for Pitt athletics.

However, if you find yourself having a visceral reaction to PantherTooth39 (whose really Jerry the CPA who has a wife and four children and who lives in Mt. Lebanon) or Littsburgh (whose really Grant the unmarried grad student who doesn’t think he wants to go into the field for which he is studying and who has always dreamt about moving to San Francisco) because they think our recruiting sucks and you think it’s better than people give it credit for, then it might be a good idea to walk away from the board for a few days.

Seriously, just take a walk and feed the birds or something. Listen to some music. Go for a swim. Do whatever you need to do to re-calibrate because my guess is that you’re really not mad about that at all.

We are all just offering opinions, not rendering verdicts. If someone disagrees with you, it doesn’t mean it’s because they think you’re stupid or because they are a terrible person or your forever enemy who must be eliminated. In fact, if you met these people in person, they might become some of your best friends. At the very least I’ll bet you’d have a beer with at least half of them.

They all have a shared interest in the same things you do. They just have a slightly different view on Pitt’s running back depth or how to tax the wealthiest Americans or whether or not this shade of blue is nicer looking than that shade of blue.

Is that really so bad? I love debating all of those things. That’s fun! However, I don’t like arguing about it and it never ceases to amaze me how intensely personally so many people take these discussions.

We are all just a bunch of knuckleheads with Internet access, some time on our hands and a keen interest in Pitt football and college athletics in general. It’s all good.

Cliff notes/tl;dr: let's not get too worked up over a bunch of miscellaneous people's sports opinions online.

Agreed.

All of the same but add in:

+ Accusations of being a "Nitter" because you don't follow the party line.
+ Somehow providing insight on my income/class standing, as if it matters.

If you've been around long enough, you probably had the privilege of getting a personal message from PnnyLion. He was about as far out there as anyone I've ever run into. He'd troll this board and then send hate mail.

I wouldn't use living in a huge mansion as a check mark for doing something right. More people living in those huge mansion can not really afford to live in those huge mansions. Not saying that is the case here, but if I had to bet I would bet 50/50 on people not really able to afford it.

Maybe I am jaded because I was hired help (electrician) who went into houses where it was obvious they were living pay check to pay check by the furnishings and couples talking (amazing how many people talk personal things in front of help). Just my .02

What is funny, and I have personally seen it on these forums, is that people see some posts from you that they disagree, and then that's it. It is amazing when people just label or paint you how they can take a post or a comment and run with it 10000 miles per hour in the exact opposite direction as intended.

A great example of this is my comments on the basketball board recently when I have said that recruiting this year has been disappointing. Boom. I am anti Capel, I want him fired, I am never satisfied, I can't expect to get top 10 classes every year, etc.....etc..... All I said, is considering the hiring of Capel (who is regarded as a top recruiter), and the quality of last year's class, and all of the players we were involved with, that to end up with the class we have is disappointing. I think that is fairly fair, but man if we think people are sensitive on the football forums or even political forums, there is nothing like the basketball forum to have zero tolerance for debate.

Politically, I am not a fan of this guy, but a local sports media guy who when opines on political or social issues I find actually reasoned and balanced is Mark Madden of all people. What I can't stand politically and socially, is the fact that many people just cannot even bring themselves to criticize or accept anything in admission or compromise that the other party/ideology even when it is seems to be an attempt at a discussion or solution on a problem.

What public infrastructure does Twitter use? Twitter is a private company and can restrict users in any way they want. We are currently posting on a forum on a private company's (Rivals.com) website. If Rivals wants to ban me for being a Pitt fan, there is nothing anyone can do about beyond taking their business elsewhere. Twitter is the same way. If you don't like twitter and their policies, take your business elsewhere.

People really don't understand free speech. Most often it becomes a "right" of convenience to be used as the situation dictates.

Other than benefit financially by pretending to be a public "utility", but don't act like it.

He blocked me, again, this morning lol.

First time he blocked me was a few years ago when he tweeted "How can anyone not love Michelle Obama", and I simply responded with a link to an article with her quote about being proud of her country for the first time in her adult life. He must have went through and unblocked a bunch of folks somewhere along the way.

This morning, he tweeted something about his decision to not get into climate change debates on twitter anymore - suggesting that those of lower intelligence simply don't understand what is happening. I responded encouragingly, stating that similarly, those of us with advanced scientific degrees don't get too excited about what sports bloggers have to say about complex scientific topics.

Blocked. Which is sad, because I truly do enjoy reading all of Pitt Twitter during games.

You gotta love “bloggers” who love to opine on Twitter then when someone disagrees with them they automatically block instead of trying to engage in discourse.
Yep and that’s exactly what happened. I saw some of the climate change discussion. Dokish blushes with glee when Jason Alexander (yes that Jason alexander from Seinfeld) engaged with John Steigerwald about climate scientists. Once the climate discussion started running counter to his own beliefs, he admittedly decided to check out. As this thread pointed out, he just doesn’t like to hear the other side of things.

Being challenged is a good thing. Who wants to reside in an echo chamber?? Apparently he does.
