Well, just looking at it logically, I would imagine that the Patriots’ game plan will be to run the football again, just as they did against Kansas City.
I think that’s the best way to beat the Rams. If the Patriots run the football as well against LA as they did against KC, it’s going to be very difficult for the Rams to win. Therefore, if I were in LA, my first priority would be to stop the Pats’ running game, not their passing game, as so many are assuming.
Also, I would guess that the Rams will have their corners up in press coverage against the Patriots shifty receivers, hoping to buy their talented defensive front an extra half second or so against Brady. I think that is going to work out very well for Los Angeles.
That leaves Gronkowski as probably the biggest wildcard in the entire matchup. That’s usually good news for New England. Gronk looked fabulous against KC, but that’s really the first time I’ve seen him look good this whole season.
On the other side of the ball, the Patriots are going to have to force Los Angeles to throw the football. If the Rams are able to control the game on the ground, it’s all but over. That allows them to get into their play action game, which is as good as anyone’s in the NFL.
When Los Angeles is at its best, they get the defense flowing in one direction and they beat you on the backside or deep down the field. Honestly, their offense reminds me a lot of Paul Chryst’s offensive approach. It is really a power offensive approach through a series of inside and outside zones.
That forces safeties up and causes linebackers to anticipate/guess, and when they have you doing that, they go right over the top or right behind you. It’s really an awesome scheme. However, Belichick is obviously an all-time master and he’ll have something ready to go to counter that. I can’t wait to see what it is?
These games can go any which way but loose, but to me, on paper at least, this looks like a toss up.
