** When the Pete scoreboard showed Levance’s winning three against Duke in 2007, followed by an appearance of Big Fella in the house, I kind of had the feeling that today would be one of those days when it was going to be our day.

** And it certainly was our day. A great day. In fact, it was our very best day, and our very best game in two seasons.

** Perhaps you were more impressed with our defeat of UNC last year, but that was a victory earned on amazing jump shooting.

** This was a complete game, with the Panthers delivering outstanding execution in all aspects of the game.

** This was exactly the kind of game we had become long accustomed to watching during Jamie Dixon’s tenure.

** This leads me to this question – is it a legit hope that after all his begging and pleading and teaching and screaming, that Dixon is finally starting to get through to these guys?

** Are the Panthers indeed improving as a team?

** We will learn at least some of the answer to this question with these two road games to finish the regular season. A team that plays like we played today wins those games for sure.

** Undoubtedly, we looked like a certain NCAA Tournament Team today, which wasn’t really the case two weeks ago in Chapel Hill.

** Since that day, which was quite discouraging, we have gone 3-1, and perhaps should even be 4-0 if it weren’t for the late meltdown on Wednesday.

** Let’s look at what’s changed in these past two weeks.

** First is rebounding, which actually started at the UNC Game. But we have attacked the glass, particularly the offensive glass. Our focus and energy going after rebounds has been noticeably superior to our opponent.

** Second is defense. Yes, we are actually defending. Today we guarded dribble penetration, and rotated effectively to guard perimeter shooters. And we handled ball screens. It was team defense from what has been a below average defensive team.

** We are now #88 in defensive efficiency according to Pomeroy, and that number had slipped all the way down to around #150 not long ago.

** Next is guard play. Plain and simply, Chris and James are playing better. Chris is just a smidge under 10PPG since he almost won the Miami game by himself. In his previous 7 games, he had averaged 2 PPG. Both are defending better.

** James has scored in double digits in five straight games, averaging 15PPG in that time.

** I was one of those folks who wondered if we had any guards at all when we played Virginia. I told many that I didn’t think Chris Jones should play anymore. I was dead wrong.

** Fourth is Ryan Luther. Ryan is averaging just under a smidge under 10PPG in his last 6 games. And this doesn’t really even tell the whole story, as he’s been begun to emerge as a quality post defender as well.

** Mike Young came out at the 15 minute mark of the second half. He never returned and we never missed him. Thank you Ryan.

** And when Duke cut the second half lead to ten, Ryan drove and got fouled, the later hit a deep three to push it back to 16. Not uncoincidentaly, Ryan’s three put Pitt’s point total at 64, a number Duke would never get to.

** Fifth, and most importantly, confidence. The Panthers didn’t always look like a confident team, or a team who believed in themselves. They also didn’t look like they had much leadership, nor an identity.

** Looking at how he’s stepped up his play, it appears that it’s James who is providing this leadership.

** And despite the number of detractors James has had, it was good to hear the hardy ovation he received when he was recognized on Senior Day, or when he came out with under a minute to go.

** One of the great little benefits of this lopsided wins was it allowed for a senior day appearance for Mike Lecak. In his own ways, Mike has contributed to this team greatly, and a classier man would be hard to find.

** Somehow, folks like James and Mike helped keep their team on task, and have kept it, thus far, from slipping away. In fact, James may have saved this season with one shot.

** Many were concerned that Dixon was on the verge of losing his team this year. But somehow, his leadership too has been critical.

** After Referee Jeff Anderson whistled Dixon for a technical foul, you had to like how Chris, Sheldon and James came over to rib their coach by giving him a high energy clap in his face, like he often does to them. Obviously, the players have not tuned him out as many suggested they may have.

** For now, it looks like our guys are believing in their coach, and perhaps even themselves. Teams who believe in themselves can beat teams like Duke the way they did today.

** Congrats to our team on a fine win! Let’s keep it going and nail down our spot in the Dance on Wednesday.

DT - as usual, appreciate the dribbles.

--Nice team win today.

--Each time when MY was taken out of the game, it seemed to me like he was movin' kind of slow, like he was either exhausted or something wasn't quite right. I"m probably reading too much into it...

--Luther and Jeter shot 9 for 13 off the bench. If we can get good bench contributions and if Artis is hitting shots, we are tough to beat.

--I'm fine with the Tech foul on Jamie - bothers me the way he's always out on the floor.

--Grayson Allen is a heck of a player, but he's sure easy to root against. At the end of the game, I wanted to see Ryan Luther drive strong to the hoop and I hoped that Allen would take the charge...

--Nice to see James R. get to leave the floor of the Pete at the end of a big win.

Go Pitt.

Besides our hot shooting today, I was impressed and was relieved to see great defensive rotation by all, including several nice helps from Young, especially on the pick and rolls. Excellent all around game by the Team. Now, lets go beat the Hokies!

Jamie didn't get the tech for being our on the court. It was became he yelled something to Jeff Anderson as Anderson ran by. You can see it on one of replay angles.

This year, we are 10-0 when Jeter scores in double digits.

Mike went of at 15:28 when he picked up his third foul. I watched him a number of times on the bench, wondering how he was reacting to not playing, but he was always the first off the bench at timeouts to great the players coming off the court.

If we keep playing like we did today, we can do some damage in both tournaments. Things that stuck out to me today. JR played a very good game, Jones played a good all around game and even hit the offensive glass hard, the help D was excellent, and Luther is just beginning to understand how good he can be- loved the hook over Plumlee. It was interesting that after Young picked up his third foul, he didn't return. We need Young to get his offensive game under control which it was for the most part today. Only one uncontrolled foray to the basket that I remember. Sweet win. Feel fortunate to have been at the Pete for the win over the Tarheels last year and a victory over the Dukies today- hopefully the first of many more.
Happy for JR and JD- hasn't been an easy year for either of those guys.

Jeter can really make a difference when he wants to. He's one of the more frustrating guys I can remember. His ugly shot aside (which mostly works for him) he appears to very gifted athletically. When he wants it boy is he an asset. And he was today once he got some run after his 2 quick fouls. But when he's not into it he's like the right fielder in tball staring up at airplanes in the sky.

Wow! Didn't know we still had that in us. Just incredible execution in really all aspects of the game. Duke does not lose many games where they get dominated to that extent.

  • DT, as for your above question, I am tempted to answer YES. I think Jamie got through to them before the Louiville game, but they did not finish. As a result, I think he pressed even harder on them to battle for 40 mins. and play for each other. I do think it is sinking in.
  • As for our remaining games, I will continue to look for the same effort and defensive execution that we had today. I do think it will be hard to maintain the focus and intensity that we had today, but if we come out and execute anywhere near the level we have for essentially two games now, we should be fine for our last two even though they are on the road.
  • Lastly, I am extremely proud of our team today! Jamie and the players deserve a ton of credit for this special performance!

I would even say he got to them before the Syracuse game.

Nice Job DT

- Absolutely thrilled for JRob! In a sport where fans often take style over substance, I believe few understand how really good he has been. Almost shed a tear when he got the hug from Jamie leaving the court. Thanks JRob for 4 great years!

- Has any player evolved more in season than Luther has? Troutman went from after thought to star in the Gtown game but I am unsure if that was the same growth that Luther has seemed to have done.

- Under rated is Cam's growth on defense. He is never going to be an elite athlete, but seems to be using his length better on defense and even today got his hands on a ball that went out on Plumlee that otherwise woulda been a dunk.

- Always been a Chris Jones fan. Love his shooting form and think he has a solid build to make a difference on both ends. Been waiting for 2 years to see him emerge and I am hoping for more. He is effective getting to the rim and needs to drive more. But he also has the prettiest shot on the team ... he should just get more effective from 3 over the next season plus.

Chevy never had a game as a freshman like Ryan had against L-ville.

His big game was 14 against BC in the BET of 2002.

Interesting point about Cam's defense.

Del...you're now our rabbit's foot. Maybe start a crowdfund to helicopter you to games.

Del our Rabbit's Foot?!?!

OMG, who would have thought this possible!!
Desperate times = desperate measure. Hell, I'll don a Batman costume for him if today's blast is the result.

Why can't we get the LUUUUUU ther! Chant going when Luther hits a shot? I was doing it but it didn't catch on.

I wonder if Jones has any sort of GLF in him, or if this is what we can expect next season?

I heard the LUUU ther chant . I think it can catch on.
we absolutely embarrassed Duke on the boards and we don't really have a great rebounder. All heart.

I wonder if Jones has any sort of GLF in him, or if this is what we can expect next season?

There are times when Chris can look so good. Some of those times were even last year. I was hoping that a GLF was possible this year.

I was really disappointed in Chris around the Virginia game. I remember texting during that game that it looked like he regressed.

Maybe his GLF is happening now.

Interesting point about Cam's defense.

About Chevy, and I can be off on this as I was a bit out of touch at the time, but once he emerged ... I believe it was agianst G Town ... as a defensive presence down low, he was what he was. Luther just keeps getting better in season unlike a player I can remember. From essentially just a bench player to an important role player and now a must play.

The kid gets "it". Court sense in spades. I said after the Hawaii trip last year he was our best passer. That dime to Jrob was a classic. Of course, Jamel's drop to Mike was a beauty, too. Ryan is a warrior.

It was against G-town. He wasn't playing much at the time, mostly because he was playing the four (and the three occasionally). What happened in the G-town game is that Howland inserted him at the five because Torree Morris and Ontario Lett both were in foul trouble. He got 8 points in the second half on 4-5 shooting. He got several other 6 and 8 point game as the year went on.

Seeing the result of playing good defense makes you believe in the process. Can not discount the importance of Luther and when the good Jeter shows up it gives Pitt another dimension. Everyone is playing better JRob ,CJones ,Artis if they get Young in gear they might surprise someone/two in the Big Dance. Great win!

You're right - what is up with that? I know we're a pretty good offensive rebounding team but we dominated Duke on the boards. Is that a big weakness of their team?

I saw it too, particularly when he came out and didn't come back. He looked like he was not quite limping for a couple steps.
