Dunlap reports Veilleux likely committing to Pitt

So about all this insider stuff that the staff loves Yarnell…..
He only played in 6 high school games & he's been hurt half the time he's been at Pitt.

Even if they do love him, they might come across someone they love better. And I hope they try to keep enough quality QBs that can play to where we actually have competition & aren't tied to one guy to decide the fate of the season. Stuff happens.

Yea I get it. I’ve always said - as have plenty of others - never stop recruiting. Cruel reality - if they find someone they like better they’re bringing him in.

Just pointing out some of the absurdity of what’s said and posted. Maybe they said they love him. Maybe they actually did, maybe it’s just hype. Maybe it’s just noise. The staff was in love with MacVittie too. So many run with stuff instead of taking it with a grain of salt. I believe there are some guys who know some stuff. I have no inside connections but even I had a tidbit or 2 over the years. People who knew people kinda thing. But most of that type of hype is just noise.

i think the tide has turned with some of these local media guys liking pitt. Dunlap is and always has been a pitt fan. he's just professional about it. retired colony was too. Dickerson of course is...

Poni and mueller are surprisingly. I wish Poni would slow down a bit on his pickett love to be honest. His over the top love actually brings the pickett haters out in full force..

Starkey actually was a pitt fan but working with cook soured him big time into the old cynical yinzer role he plays now..

The Poni face turn was something I never expected.

But you still have guys (in addition to the usual suspects) like Madden, Kaboly, Dulac who can't help themselves in taking cheap shots at Pitt. Kaboly is a big idiot. Trying to be Madden jr, both in snarkiness and girth. His comments on Pickett always reveal his anti-Pitt bias. And Steeler "insider" Dulac, who has never broken a story that wasn't spoon fed to him by Burt. He likes to take cheap shots too. Remember when he actually tried to make his own observation and said Pickett was no where near ready to play and looking like a bad pick? This was a week or two into training camp.

So yeah, there are some bright spots in local media, but for the most part the clowns still rule the roost.

when is the last time a local steeler media member ever broke a steeler scoop? Seriously? they report what they are told to report, been that way in pittsburgh for decades. even bichette was a mouth piece for rooney, nothing more..

you ever want an actual story broke, you have to get it from an nfl national guy like a rappoport

lol, true, and there is an army of local steeler media members. John Clayton tried and we saw what happened to him many years ago.

Even recently, why didn't anyone report how Mark Ingram couldn't see the field here but was playing significantly for KC later that same season? What happened there?

You don't think Poni is just doing a reverse-trolling angle? That's how I've always seen it. I mean, Syracuse + West Virginia... it's hard to imagine him actually liking Pitt.

i dont. i think he truly follows pitt and jumps on the bandwagon when they are good.. the over the top pickett love is a bit much and possibly a tad of a troll job but i think he likes him and just flaunts it on twitter to rile up the masses..

Because no local media member wants to anger the steelers/rooneys. if they do, they lose access and that's their bread and butter. so they regurgitate to the public what they are allowed too and nothing more..

journalism is dead..

Yeah. It's really hard to tell.

Just reading the tea leaves, I think Narduzzi has a genuine love for Yarnell. He's compared his moxie and demeanor to Kenny Pickett more than once. Tbh, after watching Yarnell against WMU, I can see some of that too. A lot of guys in that situation would piss down their leg, but he played with a lot of poise and smoothness. He has a good arm, good touch, and lots of tools to work with. Obviously, that was with a remedial playbook against inferior competition. If Yarnell was out there against a P5 team, I suspect the game would still be way too fast for him, and he would get eaten alive. That's where I think he is at right now. If he were further along, I think he sees the the field back in the Louisville game. I still think they are optimistic about his future, want to keep him in the mix, and feel he has a chance to develop into something special. No guarantees though.

It’s totally true and I actually find it hard to blame the Steelers/Rooneys. I recently read a bio of Chuck Noll and it never really has been given due just how woeful the franchise was and how it was actually a laughingstock here. Dan obviously is gone but Art III was in junior high/HS and the original negativity likely still resonates with him.

Until reading this book I never realized the horrors of what Buddy Parker (with Art’s benign approval) did to them in the early sixties: he literally traded nearly EVERY Draft pick they had over several years for washed up old drinking buddy vets. By 1968 they were basically a dead franchise. And the media here treated them as such.

Dan finally took the reins, and starting with Noll, hired Bill Nun (unprecedented for late 60s); plied the back roads of the black schools in the south for talent that nobody else would touch, drafted guys like Joe Greene and LC and Mel Blount as high picks (getting headlines like “Joe who?”) and patiently gave Noll multiple years of pretty shaky seasons that he needed to reverse 40 years of losing and build a winning machine. It was a pretty amazing accomplishment given how dead they had been. They earned their success in the trenches, and the adoration/adulation that came from it was earned honestly (ok, with some help from steroids, which the book nervously mentions but dances a bit around).

So I can see why they would flaunt and hoard the power here somewhat. it’s also a natural human tendency to abuse power. As despots go the Rooneys likely aren’t as bad as Tammany Hall and the David Lawrence Mafia 😄

controlling the media and the narrative is a nice power to have for sure..

Beautiful! Excellent!! Now that the Pittsburgh media is on the Pitt bandwagon 12 and 0 and CFP playoff next year baby! Mark it down now! That's all we needed to recruit better, coach better, and not lose games we should have won.

it's not on the bandwagon and the local media has zero effect on the season, wins/losses so i dont even know what joke you are trying to make here.. If a friendly local media had that influence, steelers would have never lost a game in the last 40 years.

just saying, it seems like we actually have a handful of local media members that dont treat pitt football like a punching bag any more..

If Yarnell is here for an education fine you stay if not he should leave . He‘s not in their plans to be the starter .

I’ll agree Duz said nice things about Yarnell and in a vax I might agree it means they have plans for him. But Duz also gushed over previous backups (was it MacDuffie?) that never saw the light of day.

I think we should all trust our eyes more than Duz words: first, the WMU game, which was a win and Yarnell didn’t blow it, but is the only real positive one can say; and the GT game, when Duz apparently didn’t have even one inkling to replace obviously floundering Slovis with Yarnell. Provably was Duz worst loss, slowly and painfully unfolding over 3 hours, and for all intents and purposes ruined this season (somewhat salvaged by running the table in Nov, but only somewhat). Yet, no Yarnell.

That all said I would prefer Yarnell start the bowl. Just to see if we all are missing something (specifically, mobility, of which he appears to have none). Not that either QB will likely throw more than 10 times.

Boy, they work fast at psu. Never really heard of the guy, so I went online to see how much eligibility he had left and he is not even listed on the 2022 roster.

How do you know? The dude is a redshirt freshman. How would the staff even know at this point?
i know i'll come off as a Yinzer here rooting for the backup but i liked Yarnell, the little that i saw him. I hope he sticks around and is given a fair shot to win the job, maybe not this year with Jurk but in the future..

You are right, he's only been here two years and has 3 years of eligibility remaining.. the fact (or assumption) that we are bringing in another Transfer QB could be discouraging for him though..

again, he threw some good deep balls in his one start. i know the game plan was watered down against an FCS team but still, he looked more than the part..

I really cant stress enough how much i want him to start and play the whole bowl game to see what we have..

The joke is how many people on this site post how the local media hates us, the national media hates us, the ACC office hates us, the broadcasters doing our games hate us, and the officials officiating our games definitely hate us. And you're right, none of this has anything to do with having a terrible bball program the last 6 years or having a little above average football program, (except for last year), for the last 40 years.

I still remember that 4 star TE we had from Youngstown who Narduzzi gushed about. He said some crazy stuff about him- along the lines of saying he looked like he could play in the NFL already. Dude never played a snap here. Transferred to FCS and did jack squat there, too.

i think the local media treats us as a little brother to psu. national media could care less about pitt to be honest..

i never understood the mindset that the ACC doesnt like pitt or is even in love with tobacco road schools. I've asked countless times of examples of how the ACC conference favors the NC schools/programs and never has one person ever given me one actual bit of info/data on that. Just an empty theory IMO.

Officials dont care, they just want the game to be over and go home..

Local media loved, LOVED Pitt hoops when we were good. They knock us when we suck, as they should.

The double standards are my beef. Just looking at recent examples … Big headlines if Pitt sports has some scandal. “Pitt football player attacks girlfriend with Bleach!!!” (and coverage is deserved, don’t get me wrong).

And PSU is given a top headline / news clip for things like it’s Rose Bowl bid. Hey that’s fair too, if you are going to consider them a local program, this is worthy coverage.

But the terrible, awful things like the PSU football gang rapes of earlier this year… Not covered even in the least! That would STILL be a daily mention in the news here if Pitt athletes were conducting frequent multiple gang rapes in school facilities!

And these are just recent double standards. We could likely cite nearly infinite other examples, of course going back to the Grandaddy Of Them All, the Sandusky scandal. Pitt football would be dead and gone here from the massive weight of the media pressure (and deservedly so); conversely the local media here covered it only grudgingly and with AP feeds. Columnists infamously declared Sandusky and Paterno innocent (and have never reneged). Despite the PG and Trib having reporters located up there it was barely ever covered. Of course, the Franklin baggage was also whitewashed. And since then it’s never ever mentioned here, it’s like it never happened.

This is the source of media disgust for most Pitt fans. Not the negative Pitt coverage (when it’s warranted). It’s the utter absence of negative PSU coverage (and mostly Steelers and Penguins and even Pirates negative coverage). This is due to longstanding bias of the old Pgh media guys; hopefully dying off.

The problem with the local media is that they've always viewed Pitt from a pro sports lens.

If you're not winning national championships, Ron Cook thinks you suck.

And I've heard Dunlap say we should be an annual fixture in the top 25. But no, we shouldn't.

Their understanding of college athletics is fairly unpolished - or at least it was. Of course, it doesn't help when you've got Penn State to the East and Ohio State to the West, share a facility with the Steelers, are in regional Notre Dame territory, have witnessed WVU be a national power for a time, etc. I think Pitt has a very hardcore following, but I can't make the leap to dubbing this a college sports town. Of course, what the hell are college sports anymore? It's all falling by the wayside anyway.

Mueller even though he went to nitterville has always claimed he's a Pitt fan
