Their understanding of college athletics is fairly unpolished - or at least it was. Of course, it doesn't help when you've got Penn State to the East and Ohio State to the West, share a facility with the Steelers, are in regional Notre Dame territory, have witnessed WVU be a national power for a time, etc. I think Pitt has a very hardcore following, but I can't make the leap to dubbing this a college sports town. Of course, what the hell are college sports anymore? It's all falling by the wayside anyway.
You're right. College sports doesn't exist any longer. It's all professional sports to one degree or another. These kids playing for the major schools, including Pitt, are professionals. And in a town with another professional football team already in existence, we're second fiddle.
