The original Palumbo Center was a cozy place to watch a game. It reminded me of St. John's campus gym. I sweated out one Pitt victory there. Trouble is, their program hasn't given their students or alums much to cheer about for 40 years. Pitt wrested away whatever interest the local fan base had in college hoops back in the day.
I wonder if Damrot will actually elevate the Dukes to the top echelon of the A10. The facility will help, but they still struggle against the middling teams. (Sounds quite like Pitt football.) Also, they generate zero buzz. I know one guy from church who has held four DU season tickets for years. He is about the only person I know who cares about the Dukes.
That said, Duquesne and Pitt should play annually at the Paint Can, and Pitt should dominate the series. If the Dukes surpass Pitt for an extended period of years, either Damrot is the Bluff version of Ben Howland, or Pitt will be in a world of hurt.
