"He played at Texas only one season, but Kevin Durant has always considered himself a lifelong Longhorn. Now, he's giving back in superstar fashion." "It's important to me to continue to give back to the university and ensure that future student-athletes have all the opportunities they need to succeed."

I'm not just talking basketball.... We need this from our former athletes who have succeeded. I can't recall seeing a headline like this from a former Pitt athlete who has achieved great success?

I'm sure his salary dwarfs NFL salaries, and nobody from Pitt recently has made it very long in the NBA. Steven Adams? Anyone else? Blair riding the bench a few years?

This should be one of the top priorities for AD Lyke.

If she secures large donations from our athletes who have been successful players, coaches, or business people AD Lyke could become a Pitt superstar AD.

In addition to donations their presence and support of Pitt athletics would go along way in generating some favorable PR for a change.

This is Mrs Buffett who is a Colorado State grad. When the new AD was hired, CSU reached out to former athletes ( I was on the Alpine ski team), alums, offering numerous ways to contribute to CSU. They contacted everyone even the Ski Team members from the late 70's /80's ha ha.

In all honesty CSU contacted anyone and everyone willing to contribute to the stadium building and general athletic fund. Even relatives of deceased CSUer's. Especially the old timers or anyone ( like me) who sat in Sonny Lubick field at Hughes with the other sorry 10k fans watching CSU football.

CSU had the team captians/leaders going way back rally their teams and organized team fund raising and donation call chains. They published names of team members and those who contributed which made it possible for some of us to connect with old friends.

I have a small media business and they focused heavily on business owners.

For those who couldn't contribute much they worked with a clothing co and offered a purchase CSU gear program with a large % of the purchases going to the new stadium fund.

There are ways to make things like this happen which is a huge opportunity for AD Lyke!

There are many creative ways to do this as you point out. Fundraising should be a priority and it remains a great opportunity because we have not done a good job. It does worry me that Lyke comes from a compliance background. I hope she has some sales blood in there somewhere.

For what it’s worth as a PITT Med alumnus and former Professor of Medicine at the School I get a call and a calendar offer for being a lifetime member annually. This is not enough. My undergraduate school is much more aggressive. PITT could do a lot better fostering both academic and sports fundraising.

In general I've found Pitt's advancement office to be terrible.

Blair’s broke.

Blair’s broke.

Actually this is a big problem for pro football & basketball athletes and is the reason many don't donate money to their U.

I believe I read that 70% of NFL players end their lives bankrupt??? Wow! I wonder if its the same stat for NBA basketball players.

The article when on to say how freinds, relatives, ex wives, girlfriends, as they get older younger wives/girlfriends ha ha thats me Mr Buffett better watch out, business partners, bad financial advisors, agents, groupies bilk the athletes out of lots of money.

The primary reason is most athletes aren't well educated so they leave the finances in the hands of others with little or no oversight which is a big mistake.

I listen to Don Imus/Imus in the Morning and he said no disbursement is made from any of his accounts without his approval. That's how you should manage your money.

Fitzgerald has cleared $100,000,000 in lifetime earnings, closest we have to a Durant. He's given a lot to charities and his foundation, enough that he got an NFL award for it.

Marino also made a lot of money, especially from endorsements and broadcasting, but is pretty famously stingy.

Adams will hit that nine figures number about three more seasons from now, but I don't know if he feels a big connection to Pitt; it would surprise me.

I believe you might have just summarized one of Pitt's fundraising roadblocks.

This should be one of Lyke's top priorities:
- Go After The Former Successful Pitt athletes who have made big money
-Second level priority Go After The Former Successful Pitt athletes who are doing well in the pros maybe not pulling down huge money
-Third priority Go After The Pitt Fans and start a "grassroots" high volume small $ donation ( like political campaigns) campaign
-Last get the Pittsburgh businesses and Corporations on the donation list.
