’09 game on classic right now. I can still remember how painful this game was; the top of Pitt’s football mountain in my watching lifetime (1988-present). My toes are still thawing from that game.

Great atmosphere at that game. Great first half. But as good a half as it was, Pitt likely could have completely put it out of reach right before the half, an easy pick 6 that the DB squandered by running into the QB to be tackled. I say "likely " because we probably would have blown a 100 point lead that day somehow. Oy vey.

Not enough offense in the second half. The QB has to make plays in those big games. A steady guy won’t cut it unless surrounded by superior talent.

Ugh. The final straw of the abyss of Pitt fb and Wanny. Biggest demon drop of all time. Geez now I need to call my therapist again.

Tough loss at the time, but that was one of my favorite Pitt teams of all time (my all time is not as long as may of you :)). It was great to be involved in a big game and have an extremely entertaining game happen on top of that. Maybe some day we'll get back to there.

Barf!

Up by three touchdowns, at home, and it got away. I was at the concession stand to beat the halftime rush and watched the kickoff to Gilyard on the monitor and thinking, you gotta be kidding me. That gave the Bearcats hope going into halftime.

That was such a fun game to be at, great crowd, people were pumped and loud, and then the bottom fell out in the second half. Talk about a mood swing. The worst part was that we took the clipper for that game and on the way back, the Cincy fans were jawing like they were Ohio State for the last 50 years.

Try having to sit with them throughout that second half. We had 6-7 Cincy students in front of us. They got drunk in the first half and became totally nuts throughout the game. The stupid ushers refused to toss them. It was bad.

Up 31-17 after Nate nix blocks a punt

31-17....at home.

Remember the snow started coming down pretty good.

What an atmosphere that day

I remember us picking off a ball late in first half and instead of running it back for a td, dude just ran out of bounds. Think it was Thomas or Fields. .

All he had to do was beat the qb, make one move and it would have been a pick 6 and instead he just quit and ran out of bounds.

It proves that meaningful games at Heinz can draw great crowds and pumped up atmosphere that supposedly is A1 thru 100 priority or every big recruit we've ever missed, at least what some here argue. Problem is that Pitt craps the bed so much and plays so few of them, and we rarely win when we have them. It's chicken egg argument, but either way, we end up with chicken poop.

One of the toughest loses in my fandom. Incredible atmosphere that game. Has to be one of the best that late into the season since the 80's right?

After game, went to lebo saloon and sit down. My buddy was bartending and he just took a look at me and poured me a glass of Jameson and walked away. Not a shot, not a double but a glass.
My daughter was 8 years old then, it was snowing all day, we got about 6 inches by the time the game ended. After it ended we went sled riding in a blizzard at the local park about a block away.

On that last long Dion run he should have not scored, and downed the ball on the half inch line.
Wanny should have run off some clock and scored and PITT would have won.

remember the snow. The depressed Cinny fans at halftime.
We had some really obnoxious and drunk Cinny guys near us and a few of us almost started a "dwarf" throwing contest to see how far a drunk obnoxious body can travel in the air!

We were to late as another couple of PITT fans took care of them???

no proof necessary. It was pretty black & white for the yinzers. Win and you are champs....ie. a de facto playoff game for all the marbles which is something this pro-town understands. If there is a game that has that kind of meaning again the yinzers will be there in full force. Once every 10 years really doesn't cut it.

Note: I don't think this year it would have worked if the WF game was at Heinz this year. Too much buzz gone from the PSU & UCF fiascos to create much enthusiasm for the Coastal. You do need some buzz behind the team in addition to a meaningful game to get a full house here.

This is why college football as it is SUCKS, Bama vs. Clemson YEAR FIVE is on the way! YAY! Bedtime-zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. That's why anyone with any sense wouldn't want subjectively selected "best teams" and prefer the winners of conference champions get automatic playoff bids, you suddenly have multiple de facto playoff games and some excitement in other than the same 4-5 college towns endlessly.

this game was the best ambience/atmosphere I've ever seen for a pitt game at Heinz. I put this above ND that year and the '03 Hokies game... This whole day was perfect, attendance, weather was perfect, snowing but not annoying slushy crap, cold but not annoying windy cold, no wind at all if I remember. Football weather but the field wasn't a mess to the point where it effected play calling.

A perfect day all around until the end of course..

Blame me as I was looking for flights to New Orleans and the Sugar Bowl on my phone at halftime. Should have known better.

Your fault for that game. My fault for Villanova in the Elite 8. I started looking at hotels for Detroit for the final four with about 4 minutes left in the game. WHY DIDN'T I jUST WAIT?!?!?!?!?!

PSU fiasco maybe. Remember, Pitt played lethargic the week before and lost to the Stewie-led WV juggernaut. That right there should have been enough to dampen yinzer enthusiasm by at least 10k.

I've said that WVU loss was worse for us than 13-9 was for WVU. We've been in a funk ever since. WVU rebounded with three straight 9-win seasons after 13-9 and then fired that coach for not winning enough.

Wanny kept saying that game didn't mean anything and that Cinci was the main target. Well the team came out and played like it didn't mean anything,

2009 was really the year. Easiest schedule in the modern era. Should have been 11-0 going into Cinci. WVU on road was only tough game. Would have had big national buzz on us and a top 5 ranking.

I forgot how good that season was, they where 9-1 and top 10, then lost to WVU, like 19-16 right? and Cincy! Even the one loss, wasn't it a comeback win lead by Russell Wilson, who was at NC State? They blew that game at the end too, didn't they? Really, that was a season where a 12-0 record was in reach and they went 9-3.

yep, see my post from about two minutes ago

I refuse to watch it, but I remember Max Gruder dropping an interception that was tipped late in the game. That play is overlooked.

that NC State team was bad too. like 2-6 in ACC bad. wvu game was weird, it meant nothing which I think hurt our team's preparation..

NC State had us all game, we were playing catch up. then instead of closing it out, they either went for it on 4th or turned It over and gave us another shot to win.. needless to say, we didn't deserve to win that game..

That game crushed my soul. I recall my friend's dad absolutely losing his mind over that game.
Nobody in my section had anything to say. Just walked out in silence. Not so much stunned; bad Pitt losses are pretty common and not a surprise by now, but this particular one was yet a new twist for the annals. Or another word spelled close to annals.

We got a miraculous turnover inside their 20 I believe. Failed miserably to score. Stull's fourth down pass went into the freaking crowd.

As an aside when the poster made this thread I searched high and low for espn classic only to see comcast has ditched them

Scorin Dorin should have made the TD catch on 3rd down. It was tough (of course not a great throw by Stull) but he could have made it. Yeah I think that was a 5-7 ACC team. As I said, easiest schedule in decades. Senior laden team. Wanny would have had a fish sammie named after him if he would have delivered a very achievable 12-0 that season.
