I think Fede has really been such a difference maker. Mostly defensively, but he is contributing on both ends. When he comes off the floor, our defense suffers badly, like in the later part of the 1st half. I think he played the entire 2nd half, and that was a huge reason we were able to get back in it. We are not the same team when he has to sit.

Now who could’ve thought wed be better without Hugley on the floor this year 🤔

He has developed so
much from the start
of the season. He gets
position and plays within
his limits. He's still not
strong, and sometimes
loses the handle, but
even in that he's better
than earlier.

He's also spinning into
the lane off the high
pick and is forcing the
D to cover him. That
loosens it up for the
others, and he even
gets the return pass
ocassionally. He also
made a great pass for
an assist and an easy 2
in the second half. He
couldn't do that earlier
in the year. Gotta give
the coaches credit for
his in season development.

What was his +/-

I didnt like him sitting in the 1st. His presence on both ends make such a difference. And keep in mind, this is a guy who I think is a 5 or 6 on a scale of 1 to 10 in terms of P6 bigs. But that's all you need if you have pieces elsewhere. We have needed a guy like this since Gary McGhee. An unreal drought that has A LOT to do with how bad we've been.

Indeed, the season turned the moment HCJC went with Fede over Big John. Hate that the success had to come that way, but it's exactly what happened.

I doubt that's what happened. He isnt even dressing for games. It seems likely that its some sort of suspension. I am guessing Durand Johnson.

Well afterall he IS still here after someone say he gone…….wonder who could have uttered that…but seriously, TBrown was the bottom of the barrel as a 5 and slowly the position climbs from the depths. All it takes is someone who can actually play the game of basketball - you know - catch the ball and pass and stuff.

Being able to catch , pass, and dunk is nice. Moving your feet and being able to hedge and be disruptive on the defensive end is another. His greatest value to this team is on the defensive end. That said, he is getting better every game and our guards are starting to look to dump it off to him, because they trust him to catch and finish. I'd hate to see where we would be without him. As I said before, our play, especially at the defensive end, suffers greatly when he has to sit.

He does a lot of things well. His defensive recovery and help defense is good, for example. But, look deeper into the advanced stats.

His ORTG offensive power rating is pushing 130 because he finishes almost all of the plays he is expected to finish within 5 feet. This is Elite territory even with a low usage rate. He does exactly what we ask of him.

His block percentage is high.

His turnover percentage is very low, especially for a big. He doesn't do dumb things like travel. He actually catches the basketball in the interior instead of fumbling it around like past players like Terrell Brown. And he finishes it. He doesn't try to play hero ball, and his shot selection has been really good overall.

His offensive rebounding percentage is high, and defensive rebounding percentage is average

His defense is good.

Im not saying he is going to be an all conference player or anything like that anytime soon. However, there is a lot to like here, and upside is significant. He is doing a lot of things well in a lot of different areas.

Pitt would be a better bb team with a healthy John Hugely .

Fede and Big John would make a formable duo , in any world I've been 10 fouls to give is better than 5

They wouldn't be if he demanded a lot of touches. If he came back, I'd play him 10-15 minutes per game backing up Fede until he proved he can play as the "5th scorer" and not be that guy. Inotherwords, we arent passing to you. Rebound and defend or you dont play. I thought our old guards could be good but I never anticipated this good. I thought Hugley would have to be a 1st or 2nd team All-ACC guy for us to be good. Instead, we have a Big 3 of Hinson, Burton, Nelly with Elliot as the shooter and Fede as the rebounder/defender. Hugley doesnt fit.

He doesn't need to be the focal point of the offense . He's a big strong kid with some skills . Pressure the shooters opens up more space down low . As nice as a surprise as Fede has been his offense is limited to putbacks and dunks . Hugely would be a plus period . The big butt ! He needs to be healthy .

Crazy to say it, but if you somehow knew this is what Hugley was going to be this year, you probably could have convinced Collier to stay and be the backup at the 5. Likely a better fit for that role than Hugley, no?

I would like to have Hugs for some depth, but he has to be able to give you something. When he was getting minutes, he couldn't finish on the offensive end because he couldn't get off the floor. He literally had no vertical jump. He could make a 3 once in a while but that isn't what we need from him.
On the defensive end, he doesn't have the quickness, and he hasn't shown the desire to hustle and communicate with the others, leading to continuous breakdowns. Until a transformation is made, Big John just needs to keep the bench warm.

The 2 games that helped him were Sacred Heart (17 pts & 14 rebs) and North Florida (22 pts & 8 rebs)! Pitt was preparing him for ACC play, 6.3 pts, 7.6 rebs & 1.3 blk! I believe he could score more, but it's not what Pitt needs from him now!

Hugley doesn’t fit now and shouldn’t demand a lot of touches. Hahahaha ALL TIME L. Where is his 1 mill in NIL you assured us he’d get lolololol

I said 100K and probably got close to that from Alliance 412. You are 900K off.
You said he could demand whatever he wanted because you don’t know college hoops and you thought he was a top center in college basketball. You should never post again after these horrific takes were exposed.

100K.

You said Pitt was going 0-20. You should never post again.

Didn’t know Hugley wouldn’t play. Much better team without him obviously since I was the only one who realized he wasn’t good. If he plays more than 10 mins v Clemson, we will lose.

Dude, he was injured and badly out of shape and now he is more than likely suspended for the rest of the season. You are giving yourself far too much credit. He played a couple games after an injury and got himself suspended.

So you're just making up that he was suspended with absolutely zero evidence

He’s playing next game lol. I’m shocked after taking the most historic L in Pantherlair history he’s making up he was suspended.

Btw, look at the pics from the summer and fall. He was out of shape before the injury. And he was the focal point of two bad losing teams. He is and always was a solid A10 center. Now he will be lucky to transfer to Cleveland State

For the sake of the team and this very enjoyable start to ACC play, I really hope you’re wrong and Hugley can carve out a productive and meaningful role on the team this year.

I even like watching the twins more than John, sure they need to bulk up, but love the energy as they run around getting knocked over like bowling pins :)
It's downright scary when they hit the floor. It doesn't take much to drop them.

I'd put him in and yank him if I see one of the following:

1. He shoots a three
2. Doesn't rebound
3. Turns it over
4. Plays ole defense

Why are you insisting in the myth that he’s injured ?!?
Buddy
His knee was fine enough to play in multiple games big minutes - he was just terrible out there

Don’t you just revel in someone’s difficulties or failures , last yr and early this yr it was the coaching staff , the portal signings , then the recruits coming in aren’t worth a damn . How many different head coaches have you proposed ? Now Hugley , who was a bright spot on two bad teams is the reason they sucked . Get him a bus ticket to Cleveland. Get a grip , let the kid recover from his injury and get into a rhythm.

Thank you Dr PittPharm .

Athletes played injured all the time some successfully some not so. Most teams don’t fully divulge the extent of their players injuries .

While he played he was a shell of himself and no one wanted Fede starting or playing the bulk of the minutes at the 5 at the beginning of the yr.

If he plays like this the rest of his career then you’re correct , I don’t think you’ll be correct.

I do have a doctorate
So thanks for the appropriate title

I have likewise been correct on him all along and his actual “health” issue - eating himself out of an uniform
