Never reads well when you see the phrase Pitt has 7 open scholarships. I guess except when they are a package deal and not all schools have open spots for a package deal. I’ll take the size for sure, but can these guys play?

Would be big additions, in my opinion. Can they help as early as this year? I have no idea. Maybe they can; maybe only one can; maybe neither can. But they're just about the best of what's left for the '22 class, and you have to start somewhere. Give me these guys over a 6'5" center from CCBC or something, like I expect to read we offered any day now.

I think they both can play immediately.

Of course the Catch 22 is if they can play then Capel is going to have a tough time landing them. Are they shooters? I'd really like to see some guys who can shoot over people since we seem to have a hell of a time creating open shots.

Will they be good enough to move the needle this year in ACC play? If not how can they come here with the impending gloom and doom of not even sniffing the NCAAT over the last 4 years? I think they would are a good long term investment but short term seems a bit dicey, but it is a start.

I like the out of the box thinking but hard to see them out there at this level right away. But that’s the world Pitt is in right now.

We have 7 ‘ships. Adding 2 big guys with some potential seems like a no-brainer. That still leaves us with 5 openings.
I would agree if this were Capel Year 1 or 2 but he has to win next year and its doubtful these guys are better than Coulibaly, Brown, or Collier

Of course he has to win next year. But as I said before, if he thinks there is any chance at all that he is here beyond next year, and he almost certainly does, then he has to recruit for beyond next year too. If he doesn't he's a moron.

Gary, if it makes you feel any better, this actually counts as TWO scheduled visits. 😉😄

Capel certainly doesn't believe he will be here in 23-24. He would take these kids on the belief that at least one of them is better than anything they can realistically get in the portal.

These guys make sense, they fall in the range Capel would be successful at recruiting. As a competitor, as Joe said, Capel has to expect to be here past next year and recruit for that too. This by no means downplays the importance of next year.

As it relates to saving Capel's job beyond '22 - '23: Even if they can't help a ton this year, a mediocre season with a pair of 6'10" twins who are developing and could factor into the future looks better than a mediocre season with everyone graduating. So there's still value in recruiting high school talent for him.

That said, I'll be pleasantly surprised if we land these guys or have a season that is good enough to be considered mediocre.

Pitt is like second up out of five visits for them. Capel needs verbals before even letting them leave the campus.

I’m pretty sure the AD has laid out Capels future for him in clear wording. He knows, as all coaches at this level know, win and keep job or get better job, lose and get fired.

You really didn’t need to add the ‘with some potential’.

With 7 open ships and no real firm candidates, adding anyone seems like a plus.

You might believe that, but I guarantee you that he doesn't.
I’d say the more accurate description is that he knows he likely won’t be here in 23-24 unless he improves things a good bit.

The question then is how much he cares to or the level of effort he puts in to improving things. He’ll obviously be trying but there’s trying, and then there’s really trying by making changes in approach, staffing, etc etc.

Does desperation seem like a good recruiting technique ?

While we all assume that JC needs a good season to survive past this season only Heather knows for sure what the requirements are for JC to continue on as coach . His performance alone warrants firing , but his contract was his security blanket this yr and none of us really know the details of any buyout going forward . If it’s too cumbersome for the athletic department to eat next season what makes anyone feel firing JC is a done deal if they have another mediocre/ poor season !

It is starting to feel like this, IMO.

Please don't say that! The few fans that actually pay attention to Pitt basketball now will mostly disappear if Capel is here beyond the coming year. Crowds of maybe 500 will be the norm at The Pete. Maybe then they can play their games in a local high school gym and rent out The Pete to make some money on it.

i dont know, we've just endured the worst 6 year stretch in program history. would another losing season really be the difference maker?

Yeah, I know this has been a brutal 6 year stretch. You'd think it can't get much worse. I'm looking at the already lagging interest and attendance and wondering if the small crowds we do have might just disappear if Capel continues with his incompetence and losing ways next year. We say it can't get much worse than it is now, but you never know.

But I do get what you're saying. It's been pretty bad and there's no real hope going forward.

Seems like a waste for Capel. Takes a while for bigs to develop. Capel has one year. They would tie up two spots. Leaving only 4 left. And you know he won’t bring in 4 major contributing transfers out of 4 spots.

I don’t understand this argument. Capel won’t be able to bring in major contributing transfers to fill the open spots, so he shouldn’t use two of those spots on a pair of 6’10-7’0 kids who are highly ranked?

Would be nice if he could bring in Kepnang and Njie as well. Njie more likely, not sure that bridge with Westtown was not blown up now.
