I give you Penn State. Everyone is in agreement that Franklin isnt that great of a coach but he has recruited at Ohio State-levels. All they have to do is show up and they will win 9 games. Then they'll have a tricky game once a year with a team with inferior players but may be close (Iowa). But really he has recruited well enough that they should have 10 wins almost as a guarantee so there season just comes down to Ohio State and Michigan.

you know, i thought this too but they are winning games. 5-1 isn't too bad. i thought they were garbage, should have lost to army, could have lost to Iowa, but they are 5-1. you know another way to say that you should have lost? It's that you won, they are the same thing..

Teams like Michigan and ND will always get the benefit of the doubt in rankings, especially early. most teams have to prove to voters that they deserve in top 20, Michigan and ND have to prove that they don't belong in the top 20 and then they will still be ranked and have to lose again and then maybe, they wont be ranked..

Not a Michigan fan at all but they seem to be pretty respectable. good thing is, with psu coming up and of course tosu, we will know for sure if this is a top 20 team or not. I wouldn't be surprised if they beat psu but wouldn't be surprised if they lose either. same with MSU and UMD who i don't think are really that good either..

buckeyes will stomp them though, i do know that..

He has never beaten a team with better players and coaches who were polled said he cant coach.
getting top 10 recruiting classes and beating teams that you should beat gets you pretty high in the college football world.. doesn't make you great and they wont name roads after your demise but it does get you into the top 10 in todays college football world..

The one and only reason that the cesspool recruits at the high level that they do:
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

but, but, but.....the Big 10 is a gauntlet! So much better than the Coastal according to ringerdinger. It is truly a testament to Penn State that they make it out of the Big 10 with such a killer schedule.

The Big Ten is OSU, PSU, Mich, Wisconsin and 10 terrible teams (including Minnesota). To its credit, they do have 4 quality teams. The ACC has 1 this year.

exactly, and I would exclude Michigan as well. But Ding-a-ling judges a conference by the top and not the rest of the conference which is mainly mediocre to downright bad (Rutgers, Illinois, Indiana).

I said it's the better conference this year . So what? Yeah, those teams suck. Guess what... Syracuse lost by 43 points to a mediocre Big Ten team. NC State lost to a terrible WVU team. Boston College lost by 24 to a team that hadn't won a P5 road game in over a decade. Indiana would probably beat Georgia Tech. The ACC objectively sucks this year. A few years ago, the ACC was the better conference. In a few years from now, the ACC will be better than the Big Ten again . That's just how it goes. This year, the Big Ten is better. Again... so what?

Florida State has had 9 five stars and 48 four stars the last 4 years and are 15-16 in their last 31 games

What??? 65% of FSU's roster is 4 or 5 star recruits, No wonder they win so much!! Sean Miller Fan is absolutely correct. It's obvious. By the way SMF:. there - as in " look over there ", their - "that's theirs" , they're - abbreviation for they are.

Carry on.

You need to have good players and coaching to be an excellent team. It isn’t a difficult formula to figure out. You aren’t going to be an excellent team with only one of them.

It is not hard to figure out, but to execute it is very difficult and very expensive.

I believe the big 10 or (what ever the number is) is overated, keep an eye on their bowl games

And Kent State has all 1 star players. Why cant they win a National Championship. Obviously Their star rankings dont matter.

I dont understand why this is so hard to comprehend. There are outliers. Florida State is an outlier. Texas was an outlier. If you get consistent Top 10 classes, there's like an 80%-90% chance of a Top 10 finish. Star rankings matter more than anything.

RingerDinger is not wrong. Here’s Sargarin’s rankings so far of all of the divisions in CFB. The B10 East is the 2nd toughest. The ACC coastal is DEAD LAST. But don’t let facts get in your way!

1 SEC-WEST (A) = 83.55 83.59 ( 1) 7 83.56 ( 1)
2 BIG TEN-E (A) = 80.84 79.97 ( 2) 7 81.04 ( 2)

4 PAC-12-N (A) = 78.33 78.61 ( 4) 6 78.51 ( 4)
5 SEC-EAST (A) = 77.77 76.85 ( 5) 7 77.41 ( 5)
6 PAC-12-S (A) = 75.17 75.28 ( 7) 6 75.24 ( 6)
7 BIG TEN-W (A) = 74.61 75.47 ( 6) 7 74.89 ( 7)
8 ACC-ATL (A) = 73.80 75.17 ( 8) 7 74.20 ( 8)

So you are saying the SEC is the best overall conference, followed by the Big 12. Interesting.

I've been on this message board since 2003 and I have never seen one person seriously claim that stars don't matter.

So can you please explain who the "stars don't matter guys" are??

It's like the MLB. You usually need to spend money to have a good team, but just because you spend money does not mean you will have a good team. Cherry picking some teams that have under performed is no way to prove an argument.

There was a thread going the other day pretty much saying as much. The board gets all excited by 4-stars or high recruiting class rankings but will trash star ratings just as quickly if Pitt settles for third tier options and has a class in the high 40's or worse with the proverbial "Aaron Donald was a 2-star" argument.

To be fair, Sargarin rewards blowouts. OSU and PSU have feasted on some of the bottom feeders. Probably doesn't help the ACC when GT loses to The Citadel or if Clemson squeaks by UNC.

Guys you may not like them and you may not like what they are saying, but in this case, there opinion at least has merit to discuss if true.

The way I rank the CURRENT TEAMS (not historically)

Top Tier
Clemson vs OSU

2nd Tier
Pitt, Virgina Wake, NC St and Louisville vs PSU, Mich, Wisky, Minn & Iowa

3rd Tier
Syracuse, Duke, Florida St, N Carolina, VT, BC and Miami vs Nebraska, Mich St, Indiana, and Maryland

Bottom of the bucket
Georgia Tech vs Rutgers, Purdue, Illinois, and Northwestern.

IMO the Top Tier belongs to the ACC but only slightly. The ACC is better at the bottom as they only have 1 team truly bad vs B10 having 3. The Big 10 has the advantage in the 2nd tier imo. The 3rd tier is a push.

The question is how much weight does each category get to say who is the better conference. Do you give 25% to all tiers. Do you wight the top higher than the bottom like 40% Top,30% 2nd, 20% 3rd, 10% bottom? Do you also take into account how much better in each sub group. Example in top tier do you give ACC 30% B10 10%, then in 2nd teir I feel the B10 is much better so do I go ACC 0% vs B10 30%, 3rd ACC 10% B10 10%, and Bottom ACC 10% B10 0% for a total of ACC 50% and B10 50% so they are even?

There is no clear cut way of looking at this. it is all subjective.

It's also partially-subjective, but here is the CBS Sports top 130:

1. Ohio State
4. Clemson
6. Wisconsin
7. Penn State
15. Michigan
18. Minnesota
25. Iowa
30. Wake Forest
32. Virginia
37. Pitt
42. Duke
45. Michigan State
46. NC State
51. North Carolina
53. Miami
56. Louisville
58. Florida State
60. Indiana
63. Nebraska
66. Syracuse
71. Virginia Tech
72. Maryland
76. Purdue
83. Boston College
88. Northwestern
109. Illinois
120. Georgia Tech
121. Rutgers

Average Big Ten Ranking = 50.42
Average ACC Ranking = 53.5

To me, though, the disparity is even greater than that. Clemson and Ohio State cancel each other out, but we have no one to match their second tier of Penn State and Wisconsin this year. Pitt, Virginia, Miami, etc. are more akin, to me, to Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, etc. But that's just me.

No matter what metric you look up, however, it has the Big Ten as being the better conference this year. So if someone is telling me the ACC is better this year, then he or she most likely just going to deny the facts and say it is better every year, and I can't really take that opinion all that seriously. It's just like when someone above said the out of conference records are too small of a sample size. Okay, they probably are. But I guarantee that same person will be citing bowl records - which are just about the same sample size - to say the ACC is better when it fits the agenda.

very good analysis. Yes, Big 10 second tier is stronger, although Minnesota has played nobody, and barely got by their 3 non P5 OOC games.
Iowa, meh, typical of them. Poor on offense, decent defense. And I would move Maryland to bottom of the bucket. The way PSU boat raced them, plus some of their recent showings. The first 2 games are kind of a fluke now.

Note: it has been like this for several years now. B1G very strong at top, but has several bottom feeders that are worse than anything in the ACC, and maybe AAC. ACC strong in the middle with pretty much no guaranteed wins

So Maryland should move to the bottom, because the first two games were a fluke. But no mention of moving Syracuse, who Maryland beat by 43 points and who has yet to defeat a P5 team, to the bottom.

It's "logic" like this that makes my head spin.

and seriously, I suggested you and SSS81 start the objective logical fan board. You 2 would have a blast, I'm sure you would get tons of followers.

now who's obsessed? Have you even seen Maryland play the last several weeks? They got crushed by Purdue.

I suggest you either put me on ignore, or perhaps meet at Heinz pre-game for a beer or two to discuss in person.

Lol, I suppose there are always veiled internet threats when the facts get in the way.

What makes the B1G's perception so much higher is that there are very seldom upsets within conference play aside from lower ranked teams beating higher ranked teams.

The top teams also clean-up in early season OOC games much better than ACC teams do. Of course Pitt has been among the worst at destroying ACC cred. If you exclude us, the ACC probably has a better record head to head and OOC than the B1G. For generations our program has been run like it is owned and operated by secret agents from State College.
