With coaches like Sheyer, etc, Prime example is Brad Stevens. Took over Butler when he was 30 years old, just like Sheyer. Only had six years of assistant coaching experience. That’s a little more than Sheyer, but he’s had the chance to play and coach under Coach K. Granted, he took over a team that was coming off an NCAA bid, but Butler was only two years removed from .500 and below play. The fact of the matter is that if you can coach, everything else will take care of itself.

If Lyke thinks that it’s worth the risk for the high potential of Sheyer, I’ll take it. Besides, we’ve had people on here saying it’s worth the risk to hire Miller with the NCAA/FBI looming. Give him the resources needed to hire a good staff and build the program. What’s the worst that happens, we go 0-19 again? Best case is he does a good job and maybe takes the Duke job in a few years, meaning we’re in a better place.

Here’s another thing:
Bill Self: 30 years old when he got his first D1 head coaching job
Coach K: 28 years old
Jim Boeheim: 31 years old
John Calipari: 29 years old
Rick Pitino: 25 (!!) years old

Other coaches such as Roy Williams (37) and Tom Izzo (40) were still very relatively young. I’m okay with taking a chance with Sheyer instead of hiring someone who we know will be mediocre or average.

Edit: The only problem I’d have with this hire is that it’d be a complete change of direction from where they were originally looking at. But if they think he’s their guy, hire him.
