My ice hockey teammate just bought a flash new Ford Ranger. It's a really nice truck. Right side steering wheel as we drive on the left side of the road.
Want to guess where it was made?

I’ll take two guesses. Either Canada 🇨🇦 or
Medico 🇲🇽

Well my guess is wrong. Google says

As a truly global product, the Ford Ranger is manufactured in five production hubs around the world: Ford Thailand Manufacturing (FTM) and AutoAlliance Thailand (AAT), Silverton Assembly Plant in South Africa, Michigan Assembly Plant in the U.S., and the Pacheco Assembly Plant in Argentina. There are also Completely Knocked Down (CKD) operations in Vietnam and Cambodia.

Thailand.
I congratulated him on buying an American truck and he corrected me.
These tariffs may be more complex than first imagined.
Could more manufacturers offshore production to avoid retaliatory tariffs?

There is no such thing as an American made car. It may be assembled here, but all cars use at least some parts and assemblies made in other countries.

It's very complicated.
The economy is truly global. I think of brands more than products anymore. I can get all sorts of "American " products but they're really just brands. The products are made in NZ (food products mainly) or Australia, Malaysia, China, Viet Nam etc. Very few "American " products sold here are made in the US.
NZ just got hit with tariffs because of the NZ goods and services tax (GST). It's just a sales tax done nationally not like in the US where states have the sales tax. It's not anti-competitive as it applies to everything, imported or domestic.
But NZ prepared for this. New trade agreements with India to export agricultural products and increased exports of dairy products to China.
I don't expect retaliatory tariffs here. I think consumers will enforce that. People are angry at America and will avoid those brands. I think people will choose other holiday destinations too.
I just don't think this is going to have the effect that many expect.
American consumers can buy American goods and none of this would be necessary. Be a true patriot and buy American! (Says the guy in his Toyota at Walmart)
