I know this is being discussed in a lot of threads, but I figured I'd chime in. To me, it's pretty simple:
You want the play that gives you the highest percentage of taking the lead in the fourth quarter. That was the field goal.
That's it: you want the lead and the field goal gives you the lead. So you kick it, take the lead and let your defense protect you. Which is exactly what happened. The plan fell apart when the offense couldn't get a first down, and there's certainly plenty to complain about with those calls.
But when it comes to fourth down at the 1, you take the odds and run the play that gives you the best to take the lead. I'm not surprised there has been disagreement about that call, but I think it was the right decision.
