My guess is there is a 90% chance to make a 4th and 1. You do that, game over. You punt it and it goes in the endzone, all you did was gain 10 yards of field position. Of course, it could have worked out where they pinned us at the 1 but what if it didn't?
Be aggressive. If Pitt is ever in a position to win a game by gaining 1 yard, I hope we go for it also.
Actually, in the worst case scenario – which would've had them punt the football into the end zone – they still would've gained 15 yards.
Blewitt's kick was from 48 yards out. Do you think Clemson could've used those 15 yards?
Now, what happens if Clemson pins the ball somewhere inside the 10– which was much more likely? How in the hell were we going to go 60 or 70 yards in such a short period of time without any timeouts or any real playmakers to threaten them down the field?
Our entire offense is geared towards jet sweeps, shovel passes and power traps.
I am all for aggressive play calling but in the words of Kenny Rogers, "You've got to know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em."
Dabo gambled and lost, it's just that simple.
I thought at the time it was a stupid decision. I think in retrospect it was a stupid decision; and if you ask me in 10 years I will still tell you it was a very stupid decision by Clemson. I think it was largely responsible for our win so I thank them for it.
However, if the shoe were on the other foot, I would be irate with Narduzzi for putting the game at risk when there was no reason whatsoever to do that.
