Fuentes is leading candidate for Baylor job

Most reporters are lazy...but Thamel is one of the best in the biz.

If he's reporting this, my guess is an offer is coming.

Baylor is probably the easier path to a conference championship and potentially the playoff. Baylor showed that it isn't that far behind OU already. With the right coach they could win the B12 and be the one to go instead. VT or anybody in the ACC still looks to be a long ways behind Clemson.

I'm really not sure Baylor is a better job. TX recruiting might be better, but Baylor isn't the top dog in the state. And the Va. area is not too shabby. Can Baylor really pay thst much more than VT?

I wouldn't be surprised if he is doing this just to get some leverge for a pay raise.

Baylor can absolutely pay more than Virginia Tech. Do a google search for football revenue amongst the 4 playoff participants. Clemson was wayyy behind the other 3. The thing that helps Baylor is that it only has 9 other institutions to split XII monies.

Baylor has better facilities, better recruiting base and isn’t afraid to throw cash around.

Baylor may be willing to pay more, but it has nothing to do with their athletic department revenues/expenses vs. VPI's, because VPI beats them in every financial metric.

You are comparing them to Ohio state, lsu and Oklahoma, schools with some of the larger donor base. Vt and Baylor are probably more comparable.

Oh great. You have the metrics. I don’t. I just know that Baylor is more likely to pay greater $ than Whit. Go ahead and post. Interested to see the comparison. Thanks.

I just did a google search. VPI's are publicly reported.

Baylor's cam from here because they do not publicly report(admittedly, the accuracy of this source is often questioned).

Anyway, VPI's football team generates significantly more revenue and their AD showed a $4m profit last year.

If Baylor chooses to throw money at Fuente, I'm not sure many VPI folks will be that upset if he leaves.

Thank you for searching and posting. Not doubting those VPI numbers but definitely the Baylor numbers. Moreover, I don’t know if your citations would certainly qualify as “every financial metric” but I do appreciate you posting the links. My point was simply that Baylor will overpay for Fuente more so than Whit (who is an astute AD....unsurprisingly given his history at WVU ;). He IS a southwestern/TX/OK rooted coach who was at TCU during really good years. Great TX connections. ACC and XII football are honestly like different sports in many ways.

I believe I read Fuente is the highest paid coach in the Coastal. I don't think he's getting any more. They will just go and hire Shane Beamer.

Let’s just say the people around the football program like Fuentes as much as the basketball people liked Greenberg.

There are some annoyed people right now, including Frank Beamer. Fuentes recently fired a coach who is very respected and was part of the coaching staff for a very long time. The way it was handled and portrayed by Fuentes was inaccurate.

not to mention this coach is one of the most successful VT staff members not too far from retirement. No I’m not talking about Bud.

Seems to me Fuente has been a good soldier keeping Foster around and a few others from the Beamer era. It can’t be easy being less popular than your defensive coordinator in your home state.

Keeping Foster was really a no-brainer. Firing a position guy with a particular record, very strong history at VT, and class, and telling people it wasn't firing is the problem. IT was done before the bowl game, that is the strange part of it.

Richmond Times-Dispatch reporting that Fuente is staying. Unfortunately, the article was locked to non-subscribers, so I wasn't able to read it.
