After watching our "not so" special teams miss five tackles on the opening kickoff against North Carolina, I wondered, what, exactly do our defensive coaches cover and teach during the film sessions! Not just after the NC game, but over the past three years! Are ANY of the defensive coaches responsible for teaching the fundamentals of tackling, or, do they expect their players to already be fundamentally sound when they enter the program? This defense consistently misses tackles because they tackle too high, take the wrong angles or are out of position. How many times have we've seen our defense get stiff armed, run over, dragged for an additional 3 or 4 yards or completely miss the tackle because they consistently tackle near the shoulders? How many times have we seen a crushing hit from our defense? When your team is too young, or not as talented, then you'd better be fundamentally stronger and better prepared mentally. As Pitt fans, we tire of hearing about a "lack of execution" by the players. The coaches are just as responsible for the "lack of execution". The most disappointing thing to me is that the poor tackling has shown zero improvement.
