Here are my completely meaningless thoughts on Game 1 and where we are as a program:
-Pickett...Yikes. It just is starting to seem like he doesn’t have it. Yes, his protection broke down at least times but he seemingly really struggled to make reads and go thru progressions. Mix that in with horrendous accuracy and you have the recipe for trouble. He will probably improve as he gets used to the offense, but the accuracy really concerns me. I think Duzz has to be open to the idea of trying Patti soon. Give KP until the psu game and re-evaluate after.
-Run Game...Davis showed some flashes but the line had trouble opening holes. I think we will be relying on Davis a lot. Is there something wrong with Sibley? He looked very slow and didn’t run very hard
-Receivers...We probably overrated them a bit. Someone needs to step up. Some really bad drops. The tight ends are awful
-Defense...Thought the line played well and there were some good blitz calls, but I fee like they are getting a bit of a pass. Yes, I know they were put in tough spots but there is cause for concern moving forward. Virginia converted a lot of big third downs against them and Hamlin/Jackson looked awful at times. That third down conversion in the beginning of the third where they had perkins was inexcusable. Perkins doesn’t throw well and better throwing qb’s could light them up
-Couching...Bad. For some reason Narduzzi said after the game that he needs to do a better job getting the team ready. What were they doing for 8 months??? This quote would concern me if I was Lyke. Huge opening game in front of a great crowd and your coach admits the team wasn’t ready to play. It’s year 5 and his excuses are over. We are looking at a daunting schedule and missing a bowl should absolutely put his seat on fire. I feel kind of bad for Whipple as he inherited a new o-line, new rb’s, and a qb who struggles with decision making and accuracy.
-Atmosphere...Fantastic. The crowd was large and really into the game. Too bad the that is what the team gave them. I don’t want to hear anyone with the program complain about attendance. They had a chance to win some fans tonight and blew it.
-Other tidbits...UVA fans to not represent themselves well at all and were a disgrace to their university. One group in my section were the worst opposing fans I have ever seen. Completely hammered and obnoxious. Took a lot of restraint from me to avoid a fight. Seriously, when you travel to games, please represent Pitt with class and respect. Hope UVA loses out just because of their fans
Those are my thoughts. Please feel free to rip them apart. Thanks for your time
