Garden season

Tomato’s are doing great. Planted one super sweet cherry, a beefmaster a better boy and big boy two romas a San marzano and one Brandywine. Have a number tomatoes that should ripen by the end of the month. Trying something different this year. Got some 5 foot cattle fence and and training the vines to grow on the fence. Had 8 foot tee posts and attached the fence about a foot off the ground.

Have two russet potato patches. One from potatoes I harvested last year and one from new seed potato’s I bought from Lowe’s.

also planted some sweet potatoes again from potatoes I harvested last year

Romain and spinach has been great so far as well as Texas sweet onions and broccoli. Will have to freeze some of the broccoli. Should be harvesting the cabbage soon as well

For some reason the Brussels sprouts didn’t produce so I pulled them. I’ll plant them again for the fall winter garden

Also have one hill of cantaloupe, watermelon and spaghetti squash’s. Zuchinni is starting to flower so should be able to start harvesting zuchinni soon .

Just replanted some bush beens. For some reason the seed I used didn’t sprout (two years old) so I bought some new seeds and planted them today. Sweet corn has come up as well

Planted 5 different varieties of sun flowers in the back of the garden for some color and to feed the birds.

Gotta put up a deer fence soon as there is a family down by the lake. They don’t bother my garden until about June when they bring up their fawns in search of food

Tried using all seed this year for flowers. Zinias black eyed Susan’s cone flowers purple sage. And vincas. I had vincas last year and bought some seed but I can’t tell the difference between the seed I planted and the vincas that are growing from the seed left from last years plants.

So far it’s been a great year. Had to spray my cabbage for bugs. Used a soap and vegetable oil solution. I do everthing organically and avoid chemicals. I found a landscape supply place that has mushroom manure so I rebuild my soil every year with that stuff. Works wonders

I’m also a lawn nut. Bermuda looks like a carpet but having to cut it twice a week to keep it looking good

That sounds amazing. Well done!

I’m having fun. Used to help my dad when I was a kid. Leaning how to optimize space and stage crops so I don’t get every thing at once. Tendency is to try to plant too many things in one space and for things like tomatoes that’s a recipe for disaster. Wish I had a bit more level space as planting and picking stuff on a hill side is a pain in the butt

I enjoy reading about all of you planting and gardening. As I said in a previous post me and my wife have gotten too old to garden like we used to. My wife is too busy taking care of her mother and my wife has me on the time bell when I work in my yard because of my heart issue. Work 20 minutes have to rest for 15 minutes then I can work for 15 minutes then have to clean up. My wife says she wants to keep me around so I can torture her while I watch Pitt football.

I which all of you a good harvest and you have 2 green thumbs.

Pitt football is bad for your heart Stay well

You Southern climate gardeners with your tomatoes already ripening an 'at are really making me jealous. I'm late on getting my tomatoes in the ground. Just planting cukes and beans and zucchini now It's been a cold and rainy Spring. (Which was just called Spring when I was a kid.)

I do have two dozen purple cabbage in grow bags (trying to outsmart the slugs) and the leaves are huge and starting to close. Lettuce is ready to harvest and radishes, onions and beets are doing well. Carrots are up too, Hope the rain slows down this weekend so I can finish transplanting.

Get Sluggo to control your slug issue. It is iron sulfate. Organic and pet safe.

Sluggo didn't help much last year when I first tried it and they crawled over, around and I think bathed in it

beer in half buried cups in the ground has worked to attract and kill a bunch which I did a few times a couple years ago

best thing for me is waiting until flowers are big enough to withstand the onslaught of slugs and going out at night regularly with a flashlight and scissors for about 2 weeks after planting and repeatedly after/during warm rains

grubs, deer, squirrels, rabbits, groundhogs.......F them all! and the F unfortunately stands more so for feed

Had the police called on me once at Pitt. Came back from the bar with friends after last call. We were out in the yard with flashlights trying different kitchen items to kill slugs. Salt, vinegar, sugar. Police came and we explained what we were doing. They suggested we go to bed. I tried to have a legal argument with them that we were in our own yard but my friends tackled me and drug me away before I got tased.

My sentiments exactly.

My Sis visits from St. Louis and hangs out on my deck to Marcel at the "adorable" Bambi's. I tell her she's an idiot and that they are nothing but huge rats.

I tried Slug Magic last year and it seemed to help a little. I will order some of @USN_Panther Sluggo Plus to try. I'll try beer too

If you drink the beer, the slugs become less worrisome. But too much beer and you're out there in your underwear pouring salt and vinegar on them.

It's a shame. This year the start of gardening season in Western PA has never been better with all of the rain and cool temperatures. But I have to admit I have been just ****ing disappointed. The dude that gave me my dirt for my raised bed garden gave me such crap that I spend more time fighting weeds than maintaining my garden and planting stuff.

That sucks. I only get soil or compost from my local garden center or my own compost pile for that very reason.
