Gonzaga & Syracuse

If Syracuse had lost that game after the refs totally blew that out of bounds call it would have been a shame.
agree. The ref who called that was almost at half court and had no angle to make that call. He should be reprimanded for even blowing his whistle on a play that can't be reviewed.

Dixon has to be punching a wall somewhere thinking why can't his team's do that.

Between Syracuse and ND I'm not sure which team I'm less impressed with. Perhaps only because a very middling Pitt team beat both.

Hopefully whomever Pitt hires will crack the code as it seems that these chuckleheads seemingly do it with ease on a somewhat regular basis.

Agreed. Cuse and nd stink with awful teams. But they can advance bc of composure and experience...which pitt lacks in spades.

If you would have told me on March 9th after Pitt beat Syracuse for a 3rd time this season that 16 days later Syracuse would be in the elite 8 playing for a trip to go to the final four I probably would have bet everything I own and then some and would now be broke as a joke. They have gotten some huge breaks in their bracket to get to this point but kudos to them for taking advantage of it and not shitting your pants like Jamie Dixon and his teams like to do at crunch time. Cuse making it to elite 8 this season especially with the way Pitt went out to Wisconsin is even more of a reason Dixon needed to go and it was time to move on.

So one of the weakest Syracuse teams in many years has advanced as far as the best Pitt team ever. Some programs are just jinxed. There's no explanation.
You did have to put it like that huh?
That's brutal
True but brutal

On the flip side of 'Cuse, think of Gonzaga, They're way past the point of being a "Cinderella." They get as good of talent as anywhere, yet they never seem to get past the Sweet 16. (No I didn't look up stats; maybe they have, just can't remember it.) Does Few get a free pass for life or does their fanbase start to grumble?

Those were epic choke jobs by both Wisconsin, and Gonzaga in the last minute. Not quite at the UNI level, but pretty close.

Well, if you're giving us a half a win, don't you have to give us a half loss too?

3 1/2 - 1/2

POST OF THE YEAR! It also does support what Harve and others have said about the tourney. That being said, the best coaches, the "legends" find ways to get it done. This was one of the worst Syracuse team and Duke team that I have seen, they go to the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 respectively. Same with Wisconsin.

While you can't solely measure a program and coach's total success by how they do in the NCAA tourney, it is how the sport determines its championship. So it does matter. A lot. For all of the success Jamie had (and Ben) we never had that "one shining moment", that unexpected run. The Elite 8 run was nice, but we were a 1 seed. And we could have lost any of our first 3 games, we didn't exactly play well in any of those games.

One reason I am not crying over Dixon's departure is that maniacal, every possession is the end of the world even against St. Francis in December angst that grows even more painful, leading to the absolute tightest wound up human being to roam any sidelines that invariably always transfers to the players who then tense up accordingly. Bye Jamie. Thanks for memories. Good.....and bad.

Syracuse has an NBA guard in Gbinije. Gonzaga has 2 NBA guys. ND has a great offense. Its no offense. The formula in March is to have very good offense and adequate D. You have to have guys to make plays.

And if wisky had advanced....it would be worse.

I am sure there are grumbles. But they are not in the same situation as Pitt.

After the Wisconsin loss, Dixon said he was "devastated" by it. Maybe that is part of the problem - no one should be devastated by losing a basketball game. It is only a game. I get that he is very competitive and wants to win - all coaches at his level do. But it is not life and death.

The formula in March is to have very good offense and adequate D.

Of the eight teams left in the tournament, four, Villanova, North Carolina, Oregon and Notre Dame have better offenses than defenses. Three, Virginia, Kansas and Syracuse have better defenses than offenses. The eighth, Oklahoma, is ranked exactly the same in offense and defense as of this morning. Seven of the teams left have top 20 offenses and six of them have top 20 defenses.

What this shows is two things. First, if you want to win the championship you have to have BOTH a good offense and a good defense. Second, there is more than one way to win basketball games. I feel like someone here has said that before, but too many people still don't listen.

Keep in mind that Syracuse beat a 7-seed, a 15-seed, and a 11-seed to get to the Elite 8.

That's not quite the murderer's row. They got very fortunate in who they were matched up against.

Certainly, at least since Kent state.
Butler was the epitome of that. Pitt should never have had to face them in round two.

This is why they say, "keep knocking on the door and they're bound to let you in."

Keep getting to the dance and eventually you'll break through, right?

Not if you're Jamie Dixon.

UUUH no. Won the first half. Didn't play the second half so how do you give us half a loss for a half that wasn't played?
