Actually, he is right. Gonzaga reached the Elite 8 in 1998-99 when Dan Monson was HC and Few was an assistant.

What was their "angle" to get this good, to become a DESTINATION team for top players, like Duke, UNC, Kentucky etc.

Because they became the west coast destination for foreign players, mainly from places like Australia. And they did that because they recruited those places harder than everyone else. Once kids like that saw that they could have some success there it became easier to get more of them on board. And so on, and so on.
