Not sure about that but willing to give him shot without bashing him. Oklahoma tenure was terrible so we will see.
Definitely not a grand slam, but just about the best Pitt was going to get under the circumstances.
I love the fact that he is still somehow only 43 years old.
I think he will recruit well at Pitt, certainly better than Stallings and probably better than Dixon.
To me the violations of the past aren’t as big a deal as they may be to others. I remember back when that all occurred there was talk of putting a show cause tag on him, but it never happened. Guys get rehabilitated all the time, no reason he shouldn’t start with a clean slate.
My only complaint about Capel is the same as it’s always been, he just was not that great of a head coach. Gameday coaching was poor and didn’t seem to make adjustments well. I thought he was ok at VCU, but the stint at Oklahoma was not good. He had that one real big year when he had Griffin and a lot of other talent, but other than that they underachieved. When he was finally fired he left the program in very poor shape.
That all being said I’m hoping he learned a lot these last 7 years sitting next to Coach K and will be much more prepared this time around. He was so young when he started coaching, hopefully this time it will be different. He certainly will be given a long leash to build the program as he sees fit.
My thoughts exactly. It would've been hard to do much better. Weird how Capel is a blast from the past and only 43.
Just looked it up, he was only 27 his first year as head coach at VCU, that is amazing in itself.
I’m hoping we still see the same recruiting Jeff Capel, just a new and much improved head coach.
If they go after Capel, it would have meant he succeeded here and I'm fine with thatI just hope Duke doesn’t throw $4mil a year when coach K retires in a a few years. Come on, I know I’m not the only one thinking it.
Regardless, I am excited about this hire. I will go ahead and predict 21-14 (2 ACC tourney wins) next season with 8 ACC regular season wins and a trip to NIT. That would be a great rebound from this past season.

Not sure about Grand Slam. Cali Paris is Grand Slam. But this is a 2 run home run if you ask me. I don’t know why so many of us failed to consider him. His resume is far superior to Hurley or Oats at a similar age.
Really super super hire by Pitt.

That is far too much to expect at this point without some huge transfers and recruits immediately eligible.I just hope Duke doesn’t throw $4mil a year when coach K retires in a a few years. Come on, I know I’m not the only one thinking it.

Anyone have quick access to his stats when he filled-in for Coach K while he was out with illness/injury a few years ago? I can't recall the results, just that he filled-in. Thanks. That one Elite 8 run was great, the rest of his tenure at Oklahoma was not good.
Hopefully he’s more than ready to show that he’s learned from that experience.
