……….Jim Jackson when discussing why the defensive play by KSU really explained why our players had such low assist numbers. Coach Weber has a very strong & athletic group of players capable of playing aggressive man defense. They are one of the few teams I think we will see this year that tried forcing our Guards out of their comfort zone. And they were very effective until Coach Capel had the team refocus how we would attack their D.
They caught both Trey & X by surprise & really effected how they would run the offense. While X & Trey both excel at going off the dribble they often do it in the structure of a offensive set. KSU never allowed these guys to get into our sets & thus they got rattled. That kind of pressure takes away a player from having assist type situations & demands individual efforts. Hence you saw Hamilton making individual efforts, Champaign doing the same, etc. These kids(our Guards) have had much success going off the dribble & many opponents never had the quickness & athletic numbers to go after them but Weber believed he did. KSU started coming after our Guards the moment they crossed halfcourt & they were very good at it.
We are still very young & good coaches across the Country are going to continue challenging us w/ different ways of attacking us w/ D.
What KSU sacrificed by going out that far to defend was that they gave up D against our Bigs & that is eventually what got them beat. Our Bigs stepped up & handled their biz.
Sure X & Trey can play out of control but that is also what makes them so hard to defend at times as well. They are fearless(especially X, Trey struggles w/ his confidence at times but the kid is athletic as hell) & dynamic. People need to take the good w/ the bad as this team grows up a bit more & discovers what each other can do for one another out on the floor. Yesterday was a very good growing & coming together game for the team & personal relationships out on the floor. Kids learn to trust & believe in one another.
You only get that by real struggles & victories out on the floor. Coach Capes had to be so happy w/ how his guys found & fought for this win.
