If I heard this on The Fan correctly, sounds like Hatthorne is the replacement for Hillgrove for the suspension. Jeff did the Basketball PBP in Bill's absence last season.

I think that's only for the first game or two, but yes, Jeff will be doing the call tomorrow.

Hathhorn is a complete bore. I would prefer to hear Larry Richert on play-by-play among the current pinch-hit options. He probably is a little rough around the edges in terms of calling action, but at least he has a good voice and radio pedigree.

In the long-term, Pitt needs to find a younger, better option.

We usually get Syracuse and PSU fans doing our stuff, so I guess a Buckeye fan is a nice change of pace. If only there were Pitt alumni qualified to do such things...

Ugh - no Larry Richert. We'll have "Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza!" dropped every 5 minutes or so.

He’s a pretty good guy, and has no issues with Pitt. My brother knows him.

I believe he will call a good game and keep the listeners better informed on stuff like correct yard line of scrimmage and down and distance. Also accurately noticing penalty flags that Billy H would miss.

How do you actually replace a Bill Hillgrove?
This will be very interesting. Dick Groat was a legend, but was more easily replaced.
There are not many guys out there with Bill’s charisma.........

I don’t know how old Hillgrove is, but it couldn’t be more obvious that his alcohol issues have deteriorated his ability to call games coherently. Age has nothing to do with it... Vin Scully, Ernie Harwell, Bob Cole, Al Michaels and many others have called games well into their late 70s/80s and kept it together. Billy was really good in his heyday, but that has long passed.

Still. When you hear Bill’s voice, you think all things Pittsburgh...He is an institution...that likes to drink a lot..

Yeah, he makes a lot of mistakes now, but his voice just makes me think Pgh sports.

He and Mike Lange are like the last such guys
