1. i kept telling you guys all off-season that the OL was the same as last year and we shouldn't expect anything different. but you all talked me into hope by saying, "OL's come together over time." now we know better: they just aren't good enough. at all. i don't know how jimmy is all ACC b/c it's not warranted. they got killed yesterday. this group is no better than they were last year. i suppose i could could argue the pass blocking is a little better. they are poor by p5 standard. but i'll come back to this.
2. i'm going to give the defense a little break. pre-season starters were twyman, davis, and mathis: 3 gone. camp didn't play yesterday, which really hurt. having said that, narduzzi's defense has a single point of failure and that is the interior defensive line. if they can't handle the LOS and get a pass rush, the secondary is exposed. we saw that for years and we saw it again yesterday.
3. NCSU's size at WR and TE are incredible. how are they not using them better in other games?
4. WR's: wayne was out. obviously Addison out the 2nd half. then the drops. i'm sorry but it's at this point, if you're name isn't Addison and you drop the ball, you're out. put a freshman in. i don't care. that's enough. a WR's main job is to CATCH THE BALL. if they can't CATCH THE BALL, then what the hell are they doing out there?
5. did we throw to a TE yesterday?
6. penalties: we all know the situation. this is multiple years now. the players aren't focused. i'm using my rule for the WR's: if players can't figure out the basic rules of football around setting up a play, and being onside, then get the hell off the football field. enough. if the same players are making the same mistakes and getting away with it, then that's coaching. you wouldn't put out a player who keeps fumbling would you?
7. offensive play calling. (see #1): i get that whipple is limited b/c the OL is so poor. but he does that OL no favors, either. your OL is getting destroyed every play and you run a 150lb running back right into it? come on. we've all watched football the last 30 years - you have to get creative when you're undermanned. we can all think of 10 ways to slow down a defensive line. whipple never does it. someone last week asked what the scheme is whipple trying to run? i don't think any of you could answer that question. watson>whippple. that's two whiffs in a row by narduzzi. pathetic. david hale had some mind-boggling terrible RZ stats for us since last year. it's beyond pathetic.
8. 4 areas that cost us yesterday (amazingly, turnovers weren't an issue): 1 - poor OL, 2 - drops, 3 - penalties, 4 - play calling. if any one of those were fixed, we win that game. just failure all over the field.
9. rest of the season: the defense is fine and probably won't have as bad a day as they did yesterday too often. for me, the only hope is that whipple gets some brains in his head and better schemes around his poor OL. if he can do that, then you're looking at maybe 2 FG drives that turn into 2 TD's. and maybe 2 non-scoring drives that turn into FG's. that'd be enough to get us to 7 or 8 wins.
10. rest of the ACC: VT blew out NCSU last week and then barely beat duke. *shrugs* i watched part of UNC-BC yesterday and the officiating sucked (you know who for). but that was a fairly even game. jurkovec did pretty well but the BC pass blocking stinks. FSU flirting with a loss to jax state. i didn't watch UVA-Clemson but looked much tighter than i was expecting.
