Heinz bids to host army navy

I'd go. If it happens, Steelers STH's would probably get first dibs on tix after the academies.

I always wanted to go to one and actually passed up a chance a few years back. My buddy is a retired Colonel and he took a group down that included a few local WWII vets. He said those guys were literally treated like rock stars at the pre and post game functions.

I am still kicking myself for not going.

The city tried once before but the Rooneys said no.

Some BS about the field would be torn up

I would absolutely love this!

For my money, Army/Navy is THE best rivalry in American sports.

To have the opportunity to go to see it live would be unbelievable.

I have been considering driving to Philadelphia for it for many years now but I've never done it. Either way, I'm going to do it.

Agree, they have it done a few times before, and just missed getting a few games. maybe this year it will happen!

Maybe Pitt should schedule Army & Navy at the end of each season as OOC and then they both can stay in the City for three weeks or have them play on a Thursday?

I wonder if they can fit the words "Army" and "Navy" inside the ornament at Midfield.

Would actuaylly be very interesting to see how the field would look. Would the end zones be fully painted? Would the midfield logo get more space?

If they couldn't do it for Pitt/PSU, Pitt/ND, etc, I'd be p***** if they did it for Army/Navy. That said, I'd love that game to come to Pittsburgh. However, it never will.

Or what actually happened was that the Rooneys were behind the effort 100% but Pittsburgh wasn't selected for the same reasons that it likely won't be selected this time.

But hey, at least you got to take a shot at the Rooneys, even if it was laughably false.

For instance, here are some quotes from the PG from the last time Pittsburgh was involved in the bidding:

***************************************************************************

Money, though, is the greater issue and obstacle.

"This is going to be especially challenging because of the economic situation we're in," said George Morgan, a retired Heinz executive, who has twice volunteered his time to help Pittsburgh compete for the Army-Navy game.

Mr. Morgan helped put together the city's package in 2001, when Army-Navy games were first opened to bidders.

He said Pittsburgh's relatively small number of corporations limits its possibilities for a game sponsor. The horrific downturn in the economy may further shrink the list of companies that could help Pittsburgh secure the game.

"My sense is it's going to be tougher for us this time," he said.

***********************************************************************************

Note that it's going to be tougher for the city in 2008 than it was in 2001, and Pittsburgh didn't win the bidding in 2001.

*******************************************************************************

Staff members of the Steelers and Pitt's athletic department are helping Mr. Morgan and VisitPittsburgh with the bid process. State Sen. John Pippy, R-Moon, a West Point graduate, also is working with them on Pittsburgh's proposal.

************************************************************************************

Seems odd that staff members of the Stillers would be helping with the bid process when they didn't want the game there, doesn't it.

So, it has been a while but in the lobby area of the Grand Concourse were/are some pictures of Army Cadets on trains coming to Pittsburgh for a game (in the 40's???). I mean LOTS of Cadets. Would be cool to see all those Cadets and Midshipmen here. Nothing like a man in a uniform. Pitt-girl "pleased". ;)

Going to the Army/Navy game tomorrow for the first time. Always been a "bucket list" thing for me. It's in Baltimore this year and we're in Annapolis right now staying with family. Really looking forward to it!

So a representative from Visit Pittsburgh.......an organization whose mission is to drive economic activity....is going to say no to 68000 tickets sold....every hotel in the city booked and every downtown eatery packed.......

because the field sucks.........

And you dont think the Rooneys fingerprints are all over this.......

I was wrong about you.....you are NOT less gullible than the average JOE

FWIW, the cost of an entire new field is less than the revenue driven by a sold-out event. NFL stadiums bring in "portable" grass surfaces all the time to accommodate soccer.

So you think that even though the Rooneys didn't want the game to be played at Heinz they allowed their employees, on the Rooneys' dime, to help try to get the game here.

Your problem isn't that you are more gullible than the average JOE, it's that your not nearly as smart as one.

No, no, clearly it costs something like eleventy-two billion dollars to replace the turf at an NFL field. That's why they never do it. Or rather they never do it more than once a season. Or, no, wait, that isn't quite right, they never do it more than twice in the same season.

Your last statement friend.....is highly debatable . but my statement stands.

U seem to be the type that need to have the last word so feel free.....

Cheers.

There would be no problems getting tickets if you wanted them. Why would Pitt season ticket holders get some priority too? I'd pay for sure if I got my Pitt seats in 136... me and 4 Colonels from the Army War College in Carlisle. I know 3 or 4 current ones, and about 15 retired ones. I could probably get 15 or 20 to come with me. Plus my uncle is a retired Navy Captain, he'd probably fly in too.

As a member of a military family I'd hate to see the liberal Rooney's get that game.

I have trouble hanging in there as a Steelers fan with that family owning the team!

Why...it's a college game?
Could be something in the PSL agreement that gives Steelers STHs a priority on other events at Heinz (non-Pitt). Pure speculation on my part. I think priority would be the academies (Cadets and Mids), Army and Navy STH, Steeler STH and then the general public. Again, just a guess. Possibly only suite holders would get this priority. All that said, hosting Army-Navy would be a great spectacle for Pittsburgh.

Navy arrives on the Gateway Clipper fleet..... Army marches across Ft Duq Bridge from Point State Park... And if we are lucky the navy cannon can take out those bloody gauche ketchup bottles atop the scoreboard.
