Saban, and Spurrier were successful college coaches who tried the pros and failed, then went back to college. Pete Carroll stands out as an NFL head coach who went to college and won big. Carroll has a great personality that appealed to young players. Can you imagine Bill Cowher groveling in front of some 17 year old kid, begging him to come to Pitt? Coaching college teams, and coaching pro teams are quite different. Yes, both involve Xs, and Os, but in college, recruiting is the name of the game. In the pros, players have power far beyond what college players do. You have to be somewhat of a ringmaster. When the stars get tired of the coach, he gets fired. Different sport, but the Penguins, led by Mario, got the greatest coach in the history of the sport fired. Think about that! Michael Jordan, and Magic got successful coaches fired as well. That doesn't happen in college. Imagine trying to deal with AB the idiot, Ben the diva, and Bell the knucklehead. Apparently Aaron Rogers lost faith in McCarthy. Exit McCarthy. McCarthy can probably land another NFL job if he wants it though. Guys with Lombardis nearly always get another shot if they want. Why would he come here to beg kids to play for him. Also, being a local means little, as the local talent level is nothing special. In the 70s, we hired 2 young coaches with SEC backgrounds. The results were fabulous. We're in an eastern league, that leans south, quit hiring these Big 10 guys.
Sorry for rambling a bit.
