Holstein vs SMU

Maybe. But they just beat a pretty decent Duke team in spite of turning it over 6 times on the road. How often does that happen?

Like I said the other day, that might be the worst possible outcome for Pitt. Duke really sniffed out SMU's tendencies, just as we did with Syracuse. But now SMU is going to do a bunch of self-scouting this week and be much more difficult to predict. But we shall see what happens.
I read where it has been done one other time this century in 120+ games. The last time was Marshall in 2011. I can't remember who they defeated.

Well maybe Pitt should'nt even show up. For petes sake, it's the same shit every week for who Pitt plays.

Here it is...

SMU's defense allowed 0 points off 6 SMU turnovers.

Via @OptaSTATS SMU beat Duke, 28-27, despite having a turnover differential of -6 in the game. Prior to SMU's win, FBS teams were 1-124 (.008) this century when losing the turnover battle by six or more with Marshall beating Memphis on November 17, 2011.

So there's a chance SMU is the only power conference team to do it since power conferences have existed. Pretty insane.

I mean that has to be a guy like Kade Bell's dream to have the D commit a guy to spy his QB so you'd hope he can adjust and make them pay. As good as Holstein and Bell have been all year, they werent these last 2. Now, Cal, I think its one of the best if not THE best defense in the ACC so ok. Syracuse, maybe it was a rhythm/flow thing.

The problem is teams are thinning out the box except for the spy basically.

There’s nothing particularly “genius” about Bell’s system. It’s somewhat like Heupel’s. You spread the field and force teams to play one thing, and then you attack the other.

The Veer and shoot traditionally struggles when it can’t attack the other thing because it doesn’t have the talent. When the thinned out box calls for run, but the OL still can’t get a push.

That’s what is happening right now for Holstein and Bell.

Just go to the 2 minute mark of this video:

Syracuse has 3 DL. A MLB. That’s the box.
There is no genius play calling in terms of that to do here. You take advantage of the thinned out box and run over them. Instead the run goes nowhere.

That’s the problem right now. Teams are thinning out the box, leaving one guy to spy. Dropping everybody else. Daring Pitt to run over them. The OL can’t get any push. Holstein can’t run because of the spy. And so he’s forced to try to find the limited throwing lanes.

And the results haven’t been good offensively the last couple of weeks.

OL just can’t get pushed around by a 3 man front. And a bad one at that.

In a related story, a PG sportswriter was found floating in the Mon River near the Southside Sports Complex.
Foul Play is suspected.

We also need the check down to Reid or designed pass plays to Reid.

I don't know if that's them not getting a push, though. That safety flew up from 11 yards off the LOS. I would think that's on the back to make him miss and they would probably sign up for that matchup most times.

Our O is definitely off, though. Last game was so weird that I almost don't remember a single play for us on offense, but it does seem like teams have kind of pushed back on Holstein's tendencies a bit. I definitely don't remember anyone getting behind the secondary down the sideline the last two games, which produced some big plays for us early in the season.

It's funny, because I actually think Yarnell is so different (can see over the LOS better and utilize the middle of the field better, has better touch on short passes, etc.) that he probably could give a team preparing for Holstein trouble. With as bad as our line is, though, it likely wouldn't be worth the tradeoff of him not being able to run or escape pressure.

Pitt's line blocked well on that particular play. That's a 3 high safety look firing to the ball as soon as it's handed off. That's a play where you hope your back would find a way to make a little more out of it than Hammond did here.

It's been said many times by the guy who actually does know about this stuff (@BFo8) that sharps move the line, not the market. You or I can bet as much as we want and nobody is moving the line.

I was reading a story on the Athletic earlier today that was basically "how can the 2-6 Jets be favored over the 6-2 Titans this Sunday?" And the answer from the guy at one of the books was basically because they knew that if they made the Titans the favorite that the sharp money would come down hard on the Jets, and they were trying to avoid that.

On the other hand, I could walk into a place today and place a maximum bet on some team and the book wouldn't waste even one thought on whether they should move the line or not. They would not care at all.
