Horton To The Portal - Confirmed

It had to be a tough year personally for him and a new start somewhere else might be what he needs .

He never lived up to the hype , but he did have the ability to change games when he was hot . Unfortunately that didn’t occur often enough .

He needs to take a step down to be impactful .

Jeff needs to get busy !

It's kind of weird, but I can always envision shooters like him going either way: Either drop to a lower level and face weaker competition or actually go to a better team that is able to hide your warts and actually create open shots for you. Granted, he would be coming off the bench in that scenario.

Just wake me up if Hugley or Burton leave. Maybe Odukale too. He has a chance to be an above average upperclassman. Everyone else… whatever :)

The good news on Pitt basketball just keeps coming. Amazing!! Coach gets to keep his job. What a Country! The worse you do the more you are paid. Fantastic. Love the way this Coach is "building this program".

you complained all year about how bad these players are. Shouldn't you be happy they're leaving?

I don't know why anyone is surprised or disappointed. We all knew there would be mass transfers. I was higher on Horton than most and thought he'd be back but I am not the least bit surprised he left. Everyone but Hugley is replaceable. However Hugley + Burton, Sibande, and Femi is a good start but you need to find guys in the portal. ISU and Miami portal'd to the Sweet 16. Wake almost got to the NCAAT. I doubt it will happen but its possible.

That's really not a good start unless you can find a few guys who are better than all of them. We can't.

We do not run a system that is better than the sum of its parts (I could have probably cut that sentence off at, "We do not run a system," and it'd still be true). We need talent.

Femi might be gone. Burton is ok, but not ACC level. We know little about Sibande. And Hugley is a liability with his handle. We don't really have anyone to build a team on right now. You can't play with 2 guys and a bunch of bench players, if they even have any.

Let's wait and see if the coaches can get anyone better than what we have in the portal. That means multiple players better. If they can't, our goose is cooked.

He’s currently in LA so maybe not by the weekend…
It didn’t matter if Horton graduated. He has a free transfer as he sat out the last one.

I figured Femi was transferring. He fit the profile.

I'm not sure why anyone is stressed. Capel has 1 year. So we only have 1 more year of this.

Burton and Sibande are ACC-level but 4th/5th starters or 6th/7th/8th man on a good team. Cant rely on them to be your go-to players.

College basketball is beyond becoming a joke now. It's already there.

And Pitt basketball is.....oh, what's the use. Until Capel is gone, it's non-existent. This is absurd.
Disagree. College basketball is not a joke. It is a joke here at Pitt. I watched a lot of games last week and there are some really good, well coached teams and good stories. See Saint Peter's Peacocks. But seeing all the good players and coaches also makes one realize just how far this program has fallen.

If Horton was easy to replace. Why didn’t capel add a player like that last year. He instead signed Payton and olidapo. Also left a scholarship open. It isn’t as easy to replace players that transfer with players from portal. Every team is looking at the portal to upgrade and Pitt is at the bottom getting scraps.

That's fine and I see your point. My point was that we're now entering the age of the portal, NIL's, and basically free agency for college basketball. That pollutes the nature of the game as it was intended to be played, in my opinion. I didn't watch much of the NCAAT except for a few games. With the games that I saw, I noted the vast discrepancy between those teams and their unselfish play, staunch defense and passing to what we have at Pitt now under this coach. It was striking.

Once teams get to the tournament, they have 2 choices, either play together as a team or go home. That has always been the case. And the nature of the game has always been polluted, going back to when Army and others cheated to win football games in the 40s to UCLA cheating under Wooden.

Didn't really work for Parker Stewart.

Trusting? No way. I mentioned in another thread how eye-opening it was that our last two coaches talked up Ellison and Horton the way they did and what kind of reflections that must serve as in terms of how we practice, etc.

But do I think it's possible to find some shooters? That I do. They're pretty much everywhere now. Do I think he will actually do it? Probably not.
He won't either way, but there is almost no way that they will do better than Horton, and that isn't saying he is anything special.

This line of thinking that "they are pretty much everywhere" is hyperbolic, but let's say there are a couple dozen for real, starting quality guards who can hit threes who can play some D and do more than just throw up threes, that are in the portal.

There are about a 100 other teams that will be much more appealing to them than Pitt.

Who knows, maybe she's peaking out the door.
She won't be here next March. Going to get out while she can like Barnes. That's an SMF guarantee. She can still land a P6 job. But another bad basketball hire and she'll be back in the MAC

Never thought they tried hard enough to get him free , but when you lack the quickness to get open on your own it’s always going to be a struggle to get clean looks if the other team knows your the only real outside threat .

There’s not a lot of cutting and screening in the Capel half court. You know, the stuff teams do to get shots for good shooters.

We do run a very proficient "dribble, dribble, pass, dribble, pass, pass, dribble & shoot late on the clock" offense
