Host, Judges and Participants Announced for Courtside at the Cathedral
Doug E. Fresh to Perform at Retro-Themed Basketball Event
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men's and women's basketball teams open the 2018-19 season Friday night with a retro-themed Courtside at the Cathedral event on Bigelow Boulevard. The Human Beat Box Doug E. Fresh will make a special appearance at the event, while 93.7 The Fan radio personality Chris Mack along with PantherVision’s Casey Garrow will serve as hosts for the evening.
The dunk contest judges will include former Pitt standouts Bobby Martin and Ronald Ramon along with Doug E. Fresh, Roberto Clemente, Jr., and 2017 Courtside at the Cathedral dunk contest champion Malik Ellison.
Doug E. Fresh, the pioneer of 20th-century American beatboxing, began his music career in the 1980s and has remained a fixture in the industry for over three decades. His career has included four albums, 17 singles and 39 soundtrack credits as well as credits as an actor, producer, writer and composer. Rap group Cali Swag District paid homage to Fresh in 2010 when they brought back some of his trademark dance moves with their song "Teach Me How to Dougie.”
Doors open at 7 p.m. with pre-show activities scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to secure seating and enter to win a spot in the event. Team intros will begin at 8:00 p.m., followed by a shooting stars competition, a student halfcourt shootout for $1,000 to the Pitt University Store and a slam dunk contest on an outdoor court on Bigelow Boulevard. The event culminates with the annual Fireworks and Laser Show presented by the Pitt Program Council scheduled to begin at 9 p.m.
Five students will have the opportunity to be a part of the show. Four students will be selected to participate in the shooting stars competition along with a player from the men's and women's teams, while a member of the Oakland Zoo will also be chosen to participate in a halfcourt shootout for $1,000.
Friday night’s dunk contest will feature Xavier Johnson, Trey McGowens and Shamiel Stevenson.
The shooting stars pairings will be Kene Chukwuka-Jasmine Whitney, Khameron Davis-Cassidy Walsh, Au’Diese Toney-Danielle Garven and Jared Wilson-Frame-Alayna Gribble.
Courtside at the Cathedral is a free event and part of #PittRetro Weekend and the University’s Homecoming festivities. The full athletics schedule can be seen below.
