Pitt Basketball to Open with Courtside at the Cathedral

Panthers to Celebrate New Season at Homecoming

PITTSBURGH – Pitt men’s and women’s basketball will open the 2017-18 season with Courtside at the Cathedral, an outdoor tipoff event Friday, Oct. 13, on Bigelow Boulevard.

Courtside at the Cathedral festivities will begin at 8 p.m. and will feature player introductions for the men’s and women’s basketball teams, a two-ball shooting competition and a slam dunk contest on an outdoor court on Bigelow Boulevard. Additional details, as well as guest hosts, will be announced at a later date.

The event will take place in front of the Cathedral of Learning, one of the marquee landmarks at the University of Pittsburgh and in the city and will be a part of Pitt’s Homecoming celebration. Festivities begin with a Welcome Back Reception hosted by the Pitt Alumni Association from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Cathedral of Learning Commons Room and culminate with the annual Fireworks and Laser Show presented by the Pitt Program Council scheduled to begin at 9 p.m.

“We are excited to have the opportunity to be a part Homecoming and bring basketball down the hill to the Cathedral of Learning,” men’s basketball head coach Kevin Stallings said. “The Alumni Association and Pitt Program Council put on terrific Homecoming events and we believe Courtside at the Cathedral will be a great addition to the schedule. The combination of Pitt Basketball, the Cathedral and the annual Fireworks and Laser Show will lead to an exciting night and a great springboard to the start of our season.”

Stallings enters his second year in charge of the program with a young but talented roster. Seniors Ryan Luther and Jonathan Milligan, the lone returning letterwinners with significant game experience, are joined by a deep incoming class of graduate transfer Monty Boykins, JUCO standout Jared Wilson-Frame, Rivals Top 100 point guard Marcus Carr, versatile big man Terrell Brown and talented spring signees Parker Stewart, Shamiel Stevenson, Khameron Davis, Peace Ilegomah andSamson George. The Panthers also added Malik Ellison, a skilled wing who began his college career at St. John's. Ellison will sit next season due to NCAA transfer rules and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

“Homecoming is a special time at the University of Pittsburgh and we’re looking forward to being part of an exciting night on Bigelow Boulevard,” women’s basketball head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio said. “In addition to the wonderful traditions and atmosphere we have at Homecoming every year, Courtside at the Cathedral will be a terrific event for the Pitt community. We can’t wait to celebrate with the Alumni Association and Pitt Program Council.”

A Pittsburgh native, McConnell-Serio enters her fifth year at the helm of the women’s basketball program. The team added significant depth and height to its roster, with an incoming freshman class that includes a pair of 6-foot-3 forwards Jaala Henry and Cara Judkins, as well as international experience in Great Britain National Team member Kyla Nelson and Puerto Rican National Team member Pika Rodriguez. Rodriguez averaged 14.6 points per game at the FIBA U19 World Cup in July. JUCO All-American forward Danielle Garven also joins the Panthers following a prolific year at Chipola College that ended in the NJCAA Elite Eight. McConnell-Serio and the squad will take a 10-day tour of Italy to experience international competition in early August.

Season tickets for the 2017-18 season are on sale now. Great lower level locations are available and can be reserved by calling the Panthers Ticket Office at 800-643-7488 or by clicking HERE.

You have to laugh to keep from crying. If Stallings wrings a winning season out of this group, I'll drink a gallon of the Stallings Kool-Aid.
