How does Wichita pay 3.3m for their coach?

That is surely a major factor in D-1 coaches' salaries. Consider the NBA: average coach - $3 mil; average player - $4.5 mil.

NCAA claims it can't afford to pay players - what it can't afford is paying coaches as it does now and also paying players.

Just a guess on my part....

but I think they probably use direct deposit to pay him. It's generally more convenient for everyone.

They do have some of the best fans in the country and sell out their 10,000 seat arena every night. Still, that's not enough to afford him.

They are paying for him in 2 ways, probably:
1. Private donations
2. The university's general fund

Especially because they have no football, basketball is critically important to Wichita State and they probably have a long-term objective to be a Gonzaga-type program, a nationally relevant every year program. They'd LOVE to land a spot in the Atlantic 10 (hey, Creighton's in the Big East, why not) or the Mountain West if they'd ever allow non-football schools in.

Despite what anybody thinks, these universities are filthy rich and can afford to pay their coaches (and players) almost anything they want. Its just that some schools choose to do it and some schools don't.

The area of Kansas in which Wichita sits doesn't produce the volume of oil that Oklahoma and Texas do, but it produces its share . . .

Large endowments don't make schools "filthy rich". Those funds

are restricted in use. Lots of schools struggle to pay the bills. If Wichita wants to pay that much, fine, it's their decision.
But fans can't just tell a school to use an endowment to suit people who want athletic excellence.

their fans don't pay $2,000 dollars/year for Steelers season tickets, $4,000/year for Penguins season tickets, etc
