How is Howland getting players

Three year old article?? No Haith?? Or Boeheim?? Or Pitino??

I don't believe they've repeated the question during their more recent "Candid Coaches" offseason questions. Haith was the omission that surprised me when it first came out. Howland was the guy on the list that surprised me, let alone seeing him in 3rd place. Felt like Calipari and Scott Drew being far ahead of the pack was pretty easy to call.

Interestingly, they also ran a question that year asking about dirtiest individual player recruitments, and our old friend Khem Birch was in the "Others Receiving Votes" section of that poll -- which more or less jibes with what's been whispered/implied on here RE: him and Skerry.

Miss State has been doing this before Howland (Jamont Gordon anyone? Renardo Sidney? Rodney Hood? Vernon Goodridge?)

Just...they have managed to do nothing with this rampant and obvious cheating, that I don't think the NCAA even cares.

Omitting Haith and Pitino is a surprise. Boeheim wasn't usualy accused of cheating while recruiting, but of academic shenanigans, falsely keeping kids eligible. This really should have gone back much further than Feb Melo and Sutherland. Cuse had several players about 20 years ago that Pitt wouldn't admit, but were multi-year strters and strs for the Orange.

If the NCAA has any cojones, which they don't, Roy Williams and both the UNC football and basketball programs should be sanctioned just as hard as Boeheim.

There are a number of other coaches with very checkered reputations out there. Kelvin Sampson, Bruce Pearl, Tim Floyd, Quin Snyder, Tim Bliss. It happens.

Cheating has to be a top down decision unless those above the HC level have their heads buried in the sand or should it be the money. Admitting students with the absolute minimum academic credentials isn't really much different than taking really questionable students ,what chance do they have in achieving academic success while playing D1 sports. Oh sorry I forgot it's all about winning !

Interesting. If he was cheating at Pitt, he must have just been learning the trade, because he didn't do a very good job at it.

I wonder how much of it is the school, and how much of it is the coach. What would Dixon's recruiting be like if he were the coach at UNLV?

It is interesting, and had me wondering whether this actually happens with him (I tend to think any accusations or smoke tends to signal fire with these things), whether Pitt really tied his hands (as people seem to always think), or whether Pitt was really simply that undesirable back then.

For whatever it's worth, he didn't do THAT poorly at Pitt. He got some Top 150ish guys (Julius Page) and Carl Krauser was 98th in the RSCI rankings. That isn't great, but considering where Pitt was (basically Rutgers) it was a pretty solid job. Although, there was also probably a Sonny Vaccaro/Adidas influence to some extent.

Agree, this article has no credibility. Bad enough Howland is on it for no apparent reason other than he got recruits at a big time school in UCLA, so people probably think he must have cheated. But no Boeheim or Pitino and you can't even take this seriously. Coach Cal will always lead anyone's list because of vacated seasons at UMass and Memphis, but IMO Boeheim and Pitino are right up there too, possibly even bigger cheats themselves.

What is your first priority as a HC at a P5 school. Win baby win. Graduate all your players and lose 20 your fired. If those above don't care how you do it then you better find a way to get it done. Paul Evans class that wasn't changed Pitt recuriting . I'm sure there's some dirt here just not as much as others do. Toooooo much money for the schools and coaches doubt very seriously either are willing to give up the big bucks to bring back integrity

Cal has really graduated from cheating, and now is just a pro at gaming the system. He exploits the situation to its highest potential. Cheating from him at this point would be pointless.

I think there is absolutely a ton more cheating like that at UNC and Cuse and Louisville than anyone wants to admit. Schools and staff bend over backwards to accommodate and please these teenagers, and crossed the line so long ago they can't even tell where it was at this point. The ideals of "student" and "athlete" have diverged so much, there extent schools go to in order to keep these kids artificially eligible is ridiculous.

Agree 100%. It's not suspicious that every kid goes to Kentucky, so what's the evidence against Calipari in present times? Louisville is just poorly run, not surprising with how Pitino acts off the court. UNC is barely even a college with the phony classes they have. Then there's Syracuse. That place just disgusts me. Boeheim always seemed to be a snake. I'd almost guarantee there is way more they could uncover at Syracuse that has gone on throughout the years.

Do I type in invisible ink? I mentioned above some big time players that landed at Miss State over the past decade. It is obvious they have a booster program that is fairly aggressive with or without Howland there.

I really think a lot of this stuff is very much like Blue Chips the movie. And many of these coaches are like Pete Bell. They aren't really actively involved, but they can give tacit approval to go ahead or not go ahead with this type of recruiting.

We know at one time, it happened here. In the 80's, we essentially bought teams. Too bad we didn't buy a coach. But it was obvious. We know now, we don't do this much and the one time Jamie delved into this type of recruiting (the now infamous Birch situation), it went badly and probably justified Jamie's aversion and distaste for it.

I think this is true of most big time schools. There exists an underground booster organization that if allowed, will help with recruiting.

Not sour grapes but I predict that the Mustapha Heron to freaking Auburn and Bruce Pearl will be a story in a few years.

Leopards don't change their spots

Well with Pearl, I think he is willing and active in recruiting or enabling boosters to "help" out the program. Others I think have boosters approaching them where they say "yay" or "nay". But a guy like Pearl I can imagine goes seeking people willing to help.
