Biggest shots in Pitt history

It wasn't a jumper, but Carl Krauser hit a layup with a second to go against Miami in 2004 to tie the game and send it into OT (we won in 2 OT's)

I don't think anyone mentioned Josh Newkirk's jumper with .000001 second left to tie the game against Clemson where we won in OT.
Was that the last time we beat Clemson?

JP hit a 3 at the buzzer, I think, at Miami around 04. Maybe it was the same game. I think it was to send it into OT. This was the game where former UNC coach Matt Doherty was the TV analyat and almost fought the play by play guy during the game.

I don’t think you are remembering that accurately. There was no buzzer beater against Miami by Page.

Didn't Patterson hit a big 3 to send a Marquettee game to OT that Pitt unfortunately lost.

I recall a game winning shot v. ND at The Pete from James Robinson too maybe?

Didn't Krauser maybe go the length of the court to beat The U in an away game one year long ago too?

Yes - I mentioned this earlier in the thread. There were 3.9 seconds left and he went coast to coast (well … he took the pass at 3/4 court) for the layup to tie and send the game into OT.

The game was in Jan 2004 and kept Pitt undefeated at the time.

True on all accounts. James also hit a three with 30 seconds left to send the game into OT against Villanova his freshman year.

What am I forgetting?

Fields vs Duke
Fields vs Xavier
Ramon vs WVU
Burton vs Miss St
Garrick Thomas vs a ranked SHU team
Austin vs Ohio St
Gibbs vs Providence

I dont recall too many last second or buzzer beating shots.
How about the Tim Glover show ?

Wasn't a buzzer beater but Lowe had a huge 3 pointer he hit late against Duke last year that was so ballsy from a freshman. Also wasn't a single shot, but that mini run Nelly went on himself against UNC two years ago was huge too.

James Robinson also hit a game winner very late against Nova one year, correct?

I think it was a 3 to tie and send to OT. Maybe with like 20 seconds left. Also had a game-tying steal and layup vs Oakland.

While we are at it, Stephen Flores had a layup at the buzzer for a really bad Pitt team to beat BC. And didnt Greer hit a 10 footer for a bad Pitt team to beat a bad WVU team?

Yes, I remember the Flores one for sure.

I think you have to put Newkirk’s shot fairly high on the list if only because we might legitimately have missed the tournament if he doesn’t make that shot.

Also, if I’m going way back, doesn’t McNeal hit like a layup with 3 seconds left to beat PSU in the NIT

Good call on both —-

Antoine Jones' tip-in at the buzzer to beat UConn in the 1992-93 season.
Antoine Jones also had a layup at the buzzer to beat Miami that year as well I think, after we threw the ball inbounds with no one on the court lol. I think we scored the layup to tie and then there was a steal layup to win the game.

This is the holy grail of crazy Pitt finishes that isn’t on YouTube. If this ending happened today it would be the #1 story in sports for a couple days it was that nuts

Was at the Ramon - WVU game. There were a bunch of upset people outside the Pete who left early, heard what was happening inside , and tried to reenter only to be denied. Why Pgh sports fans always want be the 1st in line the exit the parking lot is beyond me.

If I remember correctly, it was our ball under our own basket down 2. Leonard Hamilton wouldn't break his team's huddle so the refs let us inbound with no defense. We score an easy layup. Then Miami rushes onto the court and barely beats a 5 second call but because they werent prepared and were scrambling, we intercept the pass and hit a GW 8 footer or so.

Someone call KBL and get the footage.

I thought it was more like a steal from behind at midcourt by McCullough and then a pass ahead for a layup to Jones at the buzzer but you might be right.

In any event it’s definitely the craziest ending to a Pitt basketball game that no one ever talks about.

My memory is that you are kinda both right. SMF has the first part right, and I think Jerry M intercepted either the inbounds pass or pass ahead around midcourt and passed back to Jones near the basket for the winning layup. It all happened super fast.

Per newspaper article

Miami huddled too long during a timeout in the final seconds Saturday night, allowing No.

20 Pitt to score an uncontested layup that helped the Panthers beat the Hurricanes 86-84.

Pitt guard Jerry McCullough took an inbounds pass from under his team's basket while Miami players still were returning to the floor after the timeout. The shot tied it at 84 with 16 seconds left. After Miami freshman Steve Edwards dribbled into the frontcourt, McCullough stole the ball from him, starting a fastbreak that resulted in Antoine Jones' game-winning layup with 1.9 seconds left.”

For this mid 80’s old boy, the # 1 shot in my mind was Larry Harris’ corner shot to beat # 2 ranked Cincinnati coached by the scum bag Gale Catlett.
Was at that game - it was great!!

I would love to see this game again SO bad.

Fields vs duke. Meant that was my favorite.
Was there at the Garden. Special moment. I think I read somewhere it was our last non conference win against a ranked team on the road until we just beat OSU.

It wasn't a game winner, but it was a big emotional shot, Aidan Fisch! Call "The Best Two Points of The Ball Game"!
Amazing moment. Shame nothing like it will ever happen again unless/until the NET changes. Can't risk those previous efficiency metrics dropping.

You can put them in with like 30 seconds left. I wished they didnt count the possessions for the efficiency metrics once the game was determined to be mathematically over. No need to count possessions in a 50 point game with 5 minutes left. That seems beyond silly.
