Does anyone know how many games Marino started at Pitt? I was thinking about some of these QB's who announcers talk about having 30+ career wins, and I see Pitt went 42-6 in Marino's 4 seasons, but I see Rick Trocano had rather substantial stats at the same time as Marino in '79 and in '80 (128 & 165 attempts vs. 222 & 224 for Marino).
I found this list of winningest QB's in NCAAF history and only 2 guys have more than 42 (and only Boise State's Kellen Moore had a better win% at 50-3), so I'm guessing Marino didn't start some games. Can anyone help with the exact numbers?
UPDATE: It appears he was the starting QB for 37 wins, which means he wasn't the starter for at least 5 games (although it could be a # even lower than 37 wins because the author of this link admits he had to make some assumptions for some guys). I'm still curious if any Pitt fans know where exactly 37 comes from, if that figure is correct.
