Besides the obvious (go to traditional block font), the Florida Gators are a great example on how to have a custom number font without making them look ridiculous:

They have the custom indents around the curves while still resembling traditional block numbers. If they made the Cathedral font much subtler like above, it’d be a solid improvement.

For comparison, the last two number fonts that we’ve used

One emphasized the Cathedral edges too much, cutting into the sides of the numbers and making them look clunky, while the other cleaned up the numbers but made them look less blocky and inconsistent (flat edges vs curved edges, etc.)

White numbers look cleaner
That is my other gripe with the uniform. When I think of Pitt football, I think of these:

White numbers with gold outlines and gold name plates. The home uniform could be significantly better if it simply switched the colors around; it’d be an outstanding modern take on that uniform. I’d also prefer a gold facemask as well, but that’s just me.

When it is tough to distinguish numbers, you have the wrong font. It's that simple.

But we know simple has been difficult for Pitt.

Florida doesn’t have a Cathedral of Learning

So what on Florida's campus are Florida's numbers designed to look like? Or did they go rogue against modern uniform design conventions and just make their numbers look like numbers?

Our numbers look like numbers too...

but then again I’m sure I’m arguing with the same crew who claimed they couldn’t distinguish between Pitt and ND when they played in the old color scheme

let’s be honest Pitt fans are the absolute best for bitching about this stuff ;)

Hell, Notre Dame fans couldn't distinguish Pitt and Notre Dame colors.

I was wearing a Pitt golf shirt in the old colors and had a Notre Dame fan behind me saying, "Go Irish!". I turned around, and only then did he see that I was wearing a Pittsburgh Panthers shirt, and not a Notre Dame shirt.

He said, "Oh, I thought your were a Notre Dame fan."

That's the one they should have stuck with over the years (much like Alabama never changed). The only thing is that my recollection is that in the original version (Majors I), the name plates matched the white of the numbers.

I wasn’t around back then and only go off what I see from old pictures re: the name plates, but you could very well be right. With how inconsistent they were when it came to uniforms (shoulder stripes, number outlines, material), I wouldn’t be surprised if they also had different colored name plates.

Edit: Indeed they were, you are correct

I had just always gone off the Sherrill jerseys and assumed they were the same for Majors I as well.

Do cars look exactly like they did in the 70s?

how about clothing?

not sure why people think uniforms need to be stagnant either?

We literally have the perfect uniforms if they go back to the block font, but as someone said above the home jersey numbers need to be white and not yellow and that instantly makes them better. I've said both of these things since they released the new jerseys.

Do some cars and builds built 70 years ago look better than ones built today? Would people prefer the old designs to the new ones?
