...was laid over at LAX. My family was as well. My 11 year old son saw him first. I said we should say "hi." I expected 5 polite minutes. He gave us nearly 20 minutes. He asked my son more questions than we asked him. He spoke of his and his family's love of the burgh and his gratitude at the opportunity to be at a first class place like Pitt. I have a soft spot for the guy. He is a competitor and I think very genuine. I think he has done very well for himself, but understands he has an obligation to deliver. But....he is struggling. He seems to have lost his team. His assistants, including B Knight, seem a liability relative to his early staffs. Recruiting and on the floor have suffered. A head coach can understand the game theory, can have a vision, can manage the actual game, but he needs generals to help get players and coach them to execute when it matters. Firing Jamie isn't happening. Bad PR and bad financially. But, it wouldn't surprise me if Jamie either gave into a complete staff shake up or he outright resigned. I don't think he wants to be a liability, but the results suggest he isn't overcoming the competitive obstacles. The end of this season will either prove him resurgent or usher in change. New Chancellor. New AD. Status quo at this mediocre level won't cut it.
