As disappointing as this has been for the basketball staff, the guys saying Capel is a bust are a little off. If you have ever followed any post on the football board you know that I hammer Narduzzi on recruiting. I think this situation is a little different.

Capel has only been here a year and a few month . Prior to him getting here the Dixon, final years, and "The Stallings experiment" have left Pitt scrambling on the hoops court. We need to give this guy another year or even two before we give up on him. He took over a program that didn't win a conference games. That is tough to overcome. Let's be a little patient here. Now Narduzzi, the gloves are off LOL LOL

Capel has only been here 1 year and a month or so.

It isn’t easy to recruit big-time student athletes to The University of Pittsburgh. If anything, it should be a wake up call that Narduzzi is doing a decent job overall.

Its not bereft but disappointing considering all the connections he has and plus the how good the guards he got are.

I agree. Football was mediocre when Narduzzi arrived. Basketball was a disaster when Capel was hired.

For grad transfers, yes. They want to play their last year in the NCAAT. HS kids don't care what the team's record was before he got the job. Sorry but they don't. That's no excuse. See Georgia, DePaul, Mullin's first few classes, Auburn (OK Pearl paying but still), etc.
Follow the money !

It's going to take more than the next couple of years to turn this around. Capel needs to get the types of players he likes in here to build his program. I don't expect a real turnaround until at least 2021, and that may be with a record above 0.500. Give him at least 4 or 5 years to get this going.

I agree. Also, players seem to want to play for teams that are already good. It seems there are fewer that want to help build a team. Hell, take Morton's comments. He basically said that. Purdue is a pretty good team right now and Pitt isn't.

Grad transfers that are good want to play for teams that are going to the NCAA Tourney. They don't want re-builds, and that's what Capel has now. There are fewer big men than guards, so they want to go to a team that is almost assured to get into the tourney. Pitt isn't.

Comparing Football to Basketball makes little sense. Basketball only needs 2 years with 2-3 players a year, look around.

If Capel could have recruited a top Big, a decent shooter, and serviceable pg, it would have been a decent back to back year, and could have put Pitt near the bubble in year two...as it stands this minute.....

I wasn't comparing the two. I was comparing my stance on coaching and recruiting...

Capel is in the same boat as Stallings. You can pull the plug after 2 years, or give him 4 or 5. It doesn't matter. He's not going to work out long term. That has been obvious since day one.

Hopefully he can pull a Mark Gottfried and at least have couple of respectable seasons while he's here.

Gottfried made the NCAA 4 out of 6 years, and 2 Sweet 16’s at NC St. That should be considered successful.

"Clear from Day one"...?? No idea what you're talking about. Starting with
"day one" he came on board and made a great impression. He immediately
got three freshmen in here that were better than anyone on here knew.
He had his undermanned team playing way over their heads all season.
They hustled their asses off, never gave up and won three ACC games
which was a major improvement.
Now that he hasn't landed is major and even lesser targets, people are
jumping off the bandwagon. Ok, he didn't get Sy...let's see what he does
next.

He usually finished with 12 or 13 losses, if not more, and would squeak out an ACC record a couple of games over .500.

It's hard to last long term with those type of results in today's game.

Call me crazy but I believe spinning the court around and having a full year of proper footage will make a big difference in recruiting. The arena looked like a graveyard last year.

Consider the game and how boring the background is.

Chescat, His amazing 3 freshman are nothing special. They translated to 3 ACC wins and none of them were anywhere near talented enough to take their game to the NBA. Solid class, but nothing special.

His track record is what it is as HC. Nothing suggests he's going to suddenly going to have great success here.

Sy also picked Ole Miss because he already has relationships with two players already that was former teammates of his. One of the players was a high school teammate at Oak Hill and the other one was a teammate at Juco.

yea, Pitt's 9 national championships and all those college and Pro HOF athletes coming to Pitt was an accident.......some coaches and staffs can recruit and others can't....simple as that.

Pitt has had individual great players throughout the modern era of Pitt football, but has not had a great team since Marino graduated. A couple of the Gottfired teams were great from a personnel and overall team talent standpoint, but they unperformed. The last national championship was in 1976, that was the pay to play era. 8 of the NCs were before 1938, so how is that relevant to the modern recruiting game now?

You need bullets in your gun to recruit . Pitt won’t let their coaches even pull their guns out ! There’s nothing special about Pitt bb to sell right now , to be honest they’re a bottom dweller in a great conference . How do you sell that to guys who’ve got better options ?

In the modern era Pitt has had two periods of athletic excellence starting with Johnny Majors and Roy Chapman in the 70’s and Howland and Dixon in the BE . Let’s be honest in the 70’s Pitt cheated and looked who played bb and Fb at Pitt ...TD , Dan Marino , Huge Green , Ricky Jackson , Bill Fralic , Charles Smith , Jerome Lane , D Gore , B Shorter to just name a few . What H&D did in the BE without the help of Golden Panthers is quite remarkable. In today’s game I’d find it almost impossible for any coach to come in to a school like Pitt and replicate what H&D did without some serious extra assistance. Can it be done ,sure anything’s possible , but every yr I become more skeptical of that happening .

Pitt was great when it had great coaches and a supportive admin. .... you figure the rest out as you labor over the question of relevancy.

It has always been about 2 primary factors and everything else is substantially background noise: the quality of the HC; and whether the admin. has been supportive versus obstructive of athletics success. As thousands have opined on this board: Pitt can’t get out of their own way for the most part.

A little off? Anyone calling Capel a bust is a complete joke, and all his/her opinions should be immediately disregarded henceforth...

I didn't call him a bust. Read the post

Read my post. I said “anyone” calling Capel a bust is a complete joke. Your post said “the guys” saying Capel is a bust are a little off. “Anyone” refers to “the guys”

If I had meant “you” I would have said “you” or “goadie” or something like that. Capiche?

Now, I would definitely disagree with you when you say these “guys” are a little off. A more apt description would be these “guys” are completely off or clueless or dumbasses or fill in the blank

What is football now? A slightly better class of mediocre?

Absolutely. Reigning Coastal Division champs is better than not being Coastal Division champs.

I hope they moved the vaunted CBI trophy to the side to make room for the esteemed Coastal Division trophy in the trophy case.

Some schools want to win and enjoy the notoriety of winning athletic teams plus they enjoy the financial rewards that winning provides . Pitt just seems to not really care to be anything but mediocre in athletics and their interest lies only in the academic standing of the school . There’s no reason that both athletics and academics can’t be first class .

To TD that's a failure. Now Kevin Stallings' under .500 SEC record, that's an overwhelming success.

Don't be stupid. I never said it was failure.

I'm just pointing out the reality of today's game. It's hard to keep a job with those type of results. BTW, Gottfried was under .500 in the ACC and lost at least 12 games every year at NC State.

It's not failure. It's also not the kind of success that is going to make fans excited about Pitt basketball again either.
