I think Michigan, Ohio State, and Alabama would be your Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan (in some order).
I think Notre Dame would be Pink Floyd - Massive following, but often times given more credit than what is deserved and linked to deeper meanings and symbols that are actually hollow, unintentional, or non-existent.
Penn State - I don't know. I was going to liken them to Bon Jovi as an overrated nuisance that won't go away, but I think they're more like Jimmy Buffet (to the extent that he is actually "rock") - a cult that I will just never, ever understand.
West Virginia - Lynyrd Skynyrd, maybe? Decent history, and no shirt? No shoes? No teeth? No problem.
So who are we? My initial thought is John Cougar Mellencamp. I'm not a huge fan of his, but with the colors and name changes (Pitt, Pittsburgh), we've reinvented ourselves similarly to how he was John Cougar, John Mellencamp, and John Cougar Mellencamp. We're also somewhat of an afterthought on the college football landscape, similarly to how he is often labeled as a "poor man's so and so." But, we do have some sneaky moments of Jack and Diane and Longest Days-esque brilliance in our history with some of the seasons we've strung together, some of the talent we've produced, and some of the upsets we've compiled.
I wanted to call us Neil Young (tons of greatness and tons of pure, putting-every-sneeze-on-an-album garbage), but I don't think we're quite that high.
Anyway, I haven't given this a ton of thought... but what say you? What rock artist best encapsulates Pitt football?
