Too much of a feel good story for the media to eat up. I think even if his season is 20% less that '14 and we win 8 or 9 games, he probably wins it...

I think he has a good chance to pile up big stats......Before he got hurt last year, he appeared to be quicker than he was while still maintaining his strength. He'll have a better OL and despite losing TB I think our passing game will take less pressure off the run game. Should be fun to watch. Hope the kid can stay healthy and cash in. Hes a fine young man and has worked hard for this moment.

He has to have at least the season he had in 2014 and a 9+ win season from Pitt to have a real chance. He might get invited as a longshot finisher, but he won't win it unless he has a monster season AND Pitt wins. Less than 1500 yards from scrimmage and an 8 or less win season won't even get him close to invite, let alone a win. A RB basically has to have at least 2000 APY to have a chance. In the last 30 years the only RB on a mediocre team to win was Ricky Williams and of course he broke TD's record and had 2600 yards that season.

We would need 10 wins and win the division to even have any legit chance.

Those stats and 8 wins probably gets a trip to NYC so Herbie can talk to him before handing over the hardware to a QB with 10 wins.

Late-

Yup, it has to a top 10, Power 5, name brand team nowadays too, it's not like the old days when a player on a mediocre team could win it.

Unless Fournette, Cook or that do it all dude from Stanford are injured or there isn't truly a top QB, no chance. None at all. I expect he and Ollison to have similar stats this season and share the load.

Kid is super human, but lost in his battle with Hodgkins is his knee, too ...

Asking a lot, but man, what a story ...

Folks need to remember how crap their backfield, aside from him of course, when he put up those numbers. Now, they have dudes. Hell, they return the ACC Offensive Freshmen of the year. Again, no chance. I'm not even sure he'll lead the team in rushing.

Uhh nope! The great season part will be the reason but don't downplay the inspirational aspect of beating cancer if it comes down to him and another player.

So he should be named best college football player because of "The story of him beating cancer" ???

2014 rushing stats:

298 attempts
1765 yards
5.9 ypc
26 rushing touchdowns
4 fumbles
3 lost fumbles

If in 2016 Conner gets somewhere around 250 carries (300 not necessary), 20+ rushing TDs, 5+ ypc, and keeps the fumbles low, and Pitt gets 9 wins, he SHOULD win the Heisman. In 2014 the last 3 games he had that hip injury and was well under his game average or he would have hit 2000 yards.

no matter how great your story is and what numbers you put up, if your team gets 8 wins or less and isn't contending for its conference title, it's pretty damn hard to win the heisman. ask larry.

I tend to agree with the others. His story + a great season would make him a finalist, but he'd still need a solid team effort to get (at least) the 9-10 wins that he'd need to get him over the top.

I just don't understand why folks believe he'll get anywhere near the carries. Now, touchdowns? That's possible as he'll be used so much inside the redzone. But, even still, Ollison, Ibrahim and Hall are far superior complements in the backfield than what Pitt had in Conner's SO season.

lets be honest, if we end up with 8 wins, he has almost no chance at the heisman, even with a really good season.

some player(s) will have a great season and only have 0, 1 or 2 losses. it will go to this player. just like almost every other year.

I am not sure where the OP referenced 1500 yds but my definition would be close to 2000 + 22 TDs

1835-(1835*.2) = 1468 yards; 26-(26*.2) = 21 TDs

I included receiving yards and rounded up to 1500. He wouldn't even be a finalist with that kind of season and 8 or 9 wins for the team. He might be if he replicates 2014 and Pitt is at least wins the division, but even then I would be shocked based on historical results.

The votes wouldn't even be there for the region. I could only find a 2013 list, but votes go to guys like Paul Alexander, Ron Cook, Mark Dent, John Harris, Ron Musselmen, and some guy that writes about HS sports for the Beaver County times.

I'll add to that by pointing out that writers in the Northeast & Mid-Atlantic that are suddenly part of the B1G or Big 12 sure aren't voting for a Pitt player unless it is absolutely overwhelming that this kid deserves it. Even then, you can bet on decent from several PA voters. No doubt in my mind about that.

If history means anything, local guys like Cook would search for reasons to not award a Pitt player the Heisman.

Great kid. People in the Erie area rave about him. Great story, too, but it won't convert to Heisman votes.
The spotlight will focus on the top playmakers on the top ranked teams by mid-October and the award will be determined by their performances in key games over the final few weeks. Pitt would need to have a great season, surprise some people and crack the Top 15 (maybe higher) for him to be considered a finalist.
Young man's body has been put through the ringer over the past 18 months. Don't be surprised if the coaching staff tries to limit the beatings he takes in the early portion of the season. It may take a while for him to show top form.
Like most, I'm just happy to see him healthy again. He's a real inspiration, even if he only averages 75 yards per game.

Paul Hornoung won the Heisman rushing for about 300 yards for a 2-8 Notre Dame team.

He's a compelling story, and that will get him some votes, no doubt. But, there are a goodly amount of people out there (no doubt Heisman voters) who feel that "that do it all dude from Stanford" got robbed last year, and are determined to make sure he gets it this year.

and how many more times has this happened? just for the record, Paul won it a hell of a long time ago. when is the last time a heisman was on a 2-8 team?

this example is an exception, not the norm.

Jesus lets pump the brakes here. I hope he does well but he's coming off chemo AND a bad knee.

The more honest question is: how long until fans start talking garbage if he comes out and struggles?
