A guy you could root for, would come out and give the opponent hell, just when you thought he might win, he did the job most of the time!

We need to start loading up our wrist , to smack opponents in the legs etc when the refs are not looking

Definitely Brooklyn Brawler. Good for TV, can win when not expected from time to time, always on the cusp of moving up in class, but perpetually lets fans down.

Shane Douglas (who is from Pittsburgh, of course).

A headliner throughout his time in the independent ECW. Pittsburgh football was also a headliner in college football up through the mid-80s, as an independent.

But the ECW, due to macro-scale forces, eventually lost out as an independent entity and the WCW/WWE came to dominate. Douglas had to join those federations to "keep up." Douglas wasn't bad in his time in the WCW/WWE, but he wasn't a headliner either. A bit analogous to Pittsburgh in the Big East days.

ECW was a great show. I miss Sabu matches!

Miss Sabu too. He was a true revolutionary.

It could never survive long-term --- business always tends to consolidate, the corporate entities tend to eventually buy the innovative independents --- but ECW was fabulous for that slice in time from 1994 to 2000. As you said, a great show.

Highly relevant and good in late-70's and early-80's, completely disappeared for a while, and then made a few re-appearances (occasionally with brief but legit success) and generally just hung around pretending to still be relevant with a mission to show the new generation that the old generation was superior but no one ever believed it

Not an individual but a tag team Demolition. They wanted to be WWF's version of the Road Warriors. They had there time in the sun and were good for what they were, but couldn't continue with the success they achieved over the long all.

Brutus The Barber Beefcake...
Hugely popular TV draw, distinctive and awesome uniforms, lots of potential, but just as he was on the brink of greatness, he unexpectedly has his dreams crushed by smashing his face into pieces in a freak and gruesome parasailing accident. He never returns anywhere close to the full potential of the glory days, and made countless poorly thought-out attempts to re-invent his image.

Prince Albert would be the other easy pick, since he actually played football for Pitt.

Sid Vicious- On the surface almost everything is there for greatness (he had the look and the charisma, we have the top 15-25 recruiting area and the history) but we are missing the desire (Sid wanted to play softball and our administration wanted Basketball and to be cheap on football) to truly be great.
