7????? We're going from ZERO wins to 7 in one year while most of the ACC teams we couldn't beat this year will also be improved, probably more than us? If KS stays and the roster stays at what you listed (no one important transfers), I'd say we'll be lucky to get between 2 and 4 wins MAX in conf

That is why even though I don't think they'll get rid of them they should be more than considering it.

Let's say you're mostly correct with your roster prediction. That's probably 4 wins at best, and everyone sits back and says "this guy won 8 conference games in 3 years, why the hell didn't we just fire him last season."

Take the risk, spend the money and bring someone else in. We don't know what happens with the roster. But their chance of winning 4 games is probably about the same as if Stallings came back. And then the narrative is that we made the right move, we are heading in the right direction, let's see how this guy can bring in. And that matters a lot.
