I want someone who really believes in coming after the opponent on defense. I am sick of passive defense. I want a team that comes after you. (I know we do not currently have a roster to play that way). I want to win the turnover battle by CAUSING turnovers.

It is nice to see you are finally seeing the light. Tough, aggressive defensive, and good rebounding need to be the foundation.

Hey that Jamie Dixon guy might be a available for the right price

Jamie was not a proponent of that style of defense. He played a sagging man to man. We did not create many turnovers.

Jamie's theory always was that if you played to make steals or cause turnovers that you would be out of position.

I understand that completely. He wanted fundamental defense, limit your own turnovers, rebound, play tough and smart: An efficiency game.

After all these years, I just want to see a team that comes after you on defense. I realize that would be drastically different from what we have seen in Pitt's most recent history.

I agree. Besides being fun to watch, it creates offensive opportunities to score more. WVU is doing that. It can come back to sting you if not done properly, but it causes more good things to happen than bad.

A team needs some easy points. Pitt does not get these points from its defense, that puts them at a big disadvantage.

Yeah, like that steal or deflected ball and easy basket on the other end that we used to see a lot.

I don't think we do too well with the points off turnovers stat.

When? You mean when Knight, Page and Brown played?

So what the hell is this Coach's style of defense ? Then I'll throw in his offense. Bombs away

The way I hear it:

Man to man defense with a rim protector, don't foul, defend the 3 point line and get back to prevent transition. I am sure Stallings would like better defensive rebounding.

On offense, score at the rim, at the line and from the 3 point line. I am sure Stallings would like fewer turnovers.

Win the battle at the line and from 3. Win the game.

Seems to me that Virginia's "packline defense" (sagging m-m with some pressure on ball) is working well for them. Also, utilization of shot clock on defense permits defense to lock down for maybe 20-25 seconds. It's not like you're forcing your players to defend for minutes at a time. Unless, of course you're Pitt who give up way too many offensive rebounds.

One of the prime results of an aggressive defense is getting alot of run outs and breaks and easy baskets, which an offensively challenged team like Pitt desperately needs.

We give up plenty of easy layups while playing a patient, passive defense, so we might as well gamble on turnovers and give up those same easy layups.

One of the most disappointing things to me about the Stallings hire was that his defense is actually very similar to Dixon's.

I don’t think a Jamie coached team could ever be described as playing an aggressive defense causing turnovers. A good defense yeah, but definitely not aggressive.
his best defense was a deliberate offense which kept scores lower. but I'm no expert, just my opinion. we had some nice individual defenders though.

Dixon’s style is predicated on one word:
Efficient

Contest shots and rebound to limit opponent second chances.

Take good shots and rebound for your won second chances to score on each possession.

Very true. Stallings should have this Pitt team looking like the 2017 Warriors by now in year 2. Losing his best player shouldn't matter either. He should have top recruits pounding down the doors to play in front of 3,000 people, half of which are over 65 with one eyebrow like the "get off my lawn" crowd that spend all their time moping around this message board.

Pitt isn't allowed to have down years. They are way better than programs like Villanova, Indiana, Wisconsin, UCLA, Michigan, Notre Dame, Florida etc...

Pitt needs to assess the "type" of coach who can be successful.

You hear a lot that we cant just roll the balls out and outscore Duke and UNC, but you probably aren't going to beat Duke and UNC regardless. I don't worry about Duke and UNC. What type of style can beat UVa, ND, Miami, FSU, NCSU, etc?

There's "down" years, and there is this. Bad at almost unprecedented levels.

That's pretty over dramatic Sally. Nobody on earth said that. Not looking like the 2017 Warriors? We don't even look like the 2018 Boston College, St Johns, or Montana!

Were you saying the same thing when Dixon was here? (You may have). Seems like our fan base didn't allow for down years for him, and down years for him was losing in the first round of the tourney, if I read this board correctly.

Nobody on earth said we should look like the Warriors, that's just you being overly emotional. This year. we don't even look like St Johns, BC or Montana. Heck, even Duquesne

Right. He was the Billy Bean of college basketball. But when he couldn't get a competent center, it all fell apart.

Some posters on this board tend to be very shortsighted and narrow-minded. And God forbid you say anything positive about our former coach, the best coach in at least the past 50 years of Pitt basketball and probably longer than that.

Oh well. It's not important now. Jamie's not coming back and no coach that's even half the coach that Jamie is will consider Pitt or be our next coach. Personally, I'm wishing for Mack or Cronin, neither of which is on Jamie's level but they are at least very good and many levels better than Stallings. It's not a good situation at Pitt right now.

Good luck with your wishing

His theory is correct. Anyone who watched Pitt teams under willard can testify to that. If Kelli Taylor wasn't drunk or high or whatever... him and Vonteego made a pretty good pair at baiting guards into turning the ball over. However... if he was high... and slow to the spot... there was an open shot given up.
