I'm sitting here watching the steelers game and I have to ask a question...

Can someone please explain to me why are there security people on the field, for a game where there is no one in attendance?
In fact, why are these security people standing with their backs to the field, looking up into the empty stands of a 68,000+ stadium?
Are the vendors at the concessions stands and stores there as well waiting for customers to show up?

That’s a good question.

Can someone explain to me why Tomlin went for it, giving Denver the short field playing their backup QB?

Assuming he didn’t trust Boswell there, you can’t punt on 4th and 2 from the 35.

This is a bit of a reach, but...given the situation of this country, can you ever rule-out the possibility of an act of terrorism at a public, televised event? For this reason alone, I’d always want maximum security present.

Obviously a tough venue to kick at, not a good sign when you twice don’t trust an NFL kicker to kick a 52 yarder though.

Good answer

The Steeler running game is their weakness so far. Need to tighten that up. I hope getting Decastro back will help.

Edit: oops wrong thread.

I understand your point and I would agree with having "maximum security" at any event, BUT the security that I am referring to is the folks in the yellow jackets that syand with their back to the field and scan the crowd for trouble. Not being disrespectful to any of them, but they are not exactly "maximum security" personnel.

Boz is accurate, but he doesn't have the strongest leg. If you miss, you're giving them even better field position. Punting from the 35 is idiotic.

The most likely answer is that they're union jobs.

Yes, maybe 20-25 years ago that would fly, but certainly not now. Can’t punt from there unless you’re playing in a blizzard.

Still a little troubling, especially after you see Butker have to make a 58 yarder three times before it finally counts.

Did they pipe in fake crowd noise like KC vs Chargers?

that was bizarre mainly because it had no relevance to what occurred on the field

That would be something.

The NFL requires security by the home team to prevent disruption. It's not like baseball hasn't seen its share of nonsense by people flying drones or some idiot crawling around a scoreboard. Motivated idiots still find their way in. The home team is obligated to protect the players. That's all.

i have a weird pet peeve and it's kinda on this topic. why are there so many people on the sidelines of these nfl and college games. yes, coaches and medical staff, security and im sure some media but there are like 125 people on the sidelines, 1/3rd of them being players. Who are all these people and why are they there? You dont need this many people.

ANd yes, your original question is a good one. what do you need security for if no one is in the place.

I know. Just messing around. There's no way the NFL would get caught without security at any event.

yeah, I don't mind the fake crown noise, but they are doing a poor job in some venues synching up crowd noises with what is happening on the field.

If PITT CHAINS was around he'd be able to chime in..

Gotta love Philly piping in BOOS when Wentz and the Philly offense was stinking it up. Classic Philly!

I am certain that there are some "real" police officers in attendance who actually have the authority to do something if a situation were to occur. The "yellow shirted security folks", not so much.

Each head coach has a Police officer, opposing teams use State Police from the respective state.

If you're talking about the people with yellow jackets, they are most certainly not union jobs. It's a company called Contemporary Services Corporation. I did some part time work for them in college at Redskins games, concerts, college basketball games, etc. Pay was about $10 per hour. I was one of the few people there with any college experience.

The answer is probably that such security is required by contract and the contract was not written in a way to drop the security if there were no fans but there was still a game because such a situation was not contemplated. And the cost of paying people $10/hour to do that is negligible.

Yeah I did a concert gig like that once at a Jeff Beck show while I was a student at Pitt with yellow jacket...

One of the perks was being able to see the sound check that day and meet the bands.
