What's so interesting?

The map shows that there are more Div 1 hoops schools in the more heavily populated areas of the country. No surprise there.

the map had pretty colors...very pastel'y...reminds me of an Easter Egg hunt on a warm April morning. At least that is how I took the interesting part.

Draw a line N/S through Nebraska and Texas, and there's not a lot of College teams to choose from west of that.

Maybe those folks out west have no reason to complain about the dreaded "East Coast Bias".

is there really nothing in SW texas? ok, I just googlemapped it, there isn't. I see midland, with some "Friday night lights" reference and that's it.

I think this is D1-A or D1-AA football. Duquesne is technically a D1-AA school as is Bobby Mo. I could be wrong though.

It is division one basketball schools. It includes schools like NJIT who don't even have a football teams.

It's neither. To be a Division 1 school, the NCAA requires the school to sponsor at least 14 sports. It doesn't matter which sports, just so long as you have at least 14. There is any requirement or designation about "football" or "basketball."

I never realized how isolated Lubbock was from everything else.

If you've ever been to the Oklahoma panhandle, southeast Colorado, or northeast New Mexico --- wow, is it deserted. Most people think of Nevada or the Mojave Desert when they first think of unpopulated areas. But all of the areas above are even more empty.

Big Bend area of Texas is just as empty.

FWIW, West Texas A&M (just south of Amarillo) used to be D-1. Competed in both the Border Conference (along with the New Mexico and Arizona schools, plus Texas Tech) through the 1960s. Then the Missouri Valley Conference in the 1970s and 1980s, before dropping down.

They honestly could be D-1 again. They fit the profile. But they seem content to play at the D-2 level.

Tommy Tuberville knows first hand:

"You run me off at Auburn and you ship me to Lubbock, Texas," Tuberville said, according to 247Sports. "I'm going to tell you what, that's like going to Siberia. Somebody asked me, 'What's Lubbock look like?' It looked like Iraq."

Good old Tommy Tuberville ........ always making friends. Everyone in Cincinnati hates him, so may as well piss off the Texas Tech folk too!

West Texas does have it spots. Palo Duro canyon southeast of Amarillo is INCREDIBLE. Just watch out for rattlesnakes. I'm a big fan of Big Band National Park also. Watch out for rattlesnakes there as well. :)

Big Band? Do the play WW II era music there?

He got ya Mich. Gerry Cooney never walked into a right any better

Since I'm going to get arrested by the police very soon, my final words:

(1) To reiterate, beware of rattlesnakes if you ever visit Big Bend National Park.

(2) Apologies to anyone who was searching for Big Band National Park on Google Maps over the last 2 hours.

There's a saying: "The most beautiful site I've ever seen is Lubbock, Texas in the rear view mirror." The mentality of the place is even worse than the physical aspects of the shithole town. No wonder that there are no other universities around. Its Texas at its worst, which is really saying something.

an what mentality is that? If you want to bash Buddy Holly's birthplace you have to fill us in...The lads at Texas Tech would be none too pleased at your slight...
