We have the Purdue-Wisconsin game on and former Boise State/Washington head coach Chris Petersen is on FS1 the studio team.

Fun fact: Petersen grew up in California, played at Sacramento Community College and UC Davis, and had coaching stops at UC Davis, Portland State, and Oregon State before arriving at Boise. The only job he ever had east of the mountain time zone was at Pitt as the QB Coach in 1992 under Paul Hackett. Also on the staff was Sal Sunseri and Mike McCarthy.

Is it any surprise Alex Van Pelt had his best statistical season under him? You can find him in the 1992 Pitt Football Media Guide on page 17 using this link. From what his bio said, it sounded as if the connection was Petersen and Hackett sharing the same alma mater and “offensive philosophies.”

Petersen has mentioned Hackett as a mentor interviews before. There was an interesting smartfootball.com blog entry years ago about the Boise State "grab bag offensive philosophy."

Van Pelt was better as a freshman than a senior. His stats were padded as a senior due to Pitt being God awful and behind in games. Hackett probably thought he was a genius with the offensive numbers put up but he was blind to the fact that he was driving Pitt into the ground. With the help of the administration of course.
