Interesting read: Kirk Cousins on how Dantonio built MSU into

Not disparaging Dantonio at all, the guy has done an unbelievable job. However he has been blessed to have a run of NFL quarterbacks in Cousins, Stanton, and Cook. Eventually the time will come when MSU loses some QB's to injury, transfer, or just flat out misses on a few guys.

I put David Shaw in the same category. Had Luck and now Hogan. Already has recruited over Chryst for next year with one of the best high school QB's coming in.

The best coaches at college level are the ones that can win without an NFL level QB. Hell, James from State College can't even win when he supposedly has one.

He never had Stanton-I think you mean Hoyer. As for Cousins and Cook, they both came to MSU as unheralded Dantonio recruits. In the case of Cook, he had to beat out a much higher-rated player who was the starter at the beginning of the season but wasn't getting it done.

With all due respect your post doesn't make much sense. The best coaches are the guys who win the most games. They recruit good players and develop them, get them to play hard and focused. 9 years ago it would have been absolutely unthinkable for MSU to be competing for a national championship. Yet here they are.

You're giving him demerits for recruiting 2 QBs who ended up being NFL players? That's messed up.

Of course not you are misunderstanding me, part of being the great coach that he is is getting those Qb' s who may not have been big time recruits and them turning out to be NFL guys. But that doesn't last forever, not for any coach on the planet. There will come a time when MSU will miss and will be stuck playing some QB's that aren't that great. It happens to everyone. In a quarterback driven sport it takes a lot to still win at the highest level when your QB is often the second best on the field. That time will come for Dantonio just like it eventually does for all coaches.

It already came at MSU, and next year it may come again with Cook moving on and O'Conner slated to take his place, but the key is to only have the occasional off year while you retool at QB, and not a string of them. That's good coaching, and Dantonio has shown that ability.

Actually now that he has gotten them to the elite level they are at, it will be easier to land top quarterbacks. They just landed a good one last year.
