Intermat has separate rankings for dual meet performance and tournament performance. Tournament performance rankings is weighted in favor of teams with 2 or more wrestlers who can make a deep run in the NCAAs.
Pitt is ranked next to last in the ACC in the dual meet rankings. Only Duke is ranked lower. All of the other ACC teams are ranked in the Top 25, with VT the highest at #7. The tournament rankings are worse. Duke is ranked #25 because they have two wrestlers expected to make deep tournament runs. In individual rankings, Pitt doesn't have anyone in the top 15. Mikey, Forys and Solomon are ranked between 18 and 25, presumably because they had good NCAAs last year.
There are a lot of ranked freshmen. That isn't surprising. Ohio State won the title last year in large part due to three freshman making the finals and two (I think) winning. Every PSU freshman who starts and a couple who don't are ranked. There are a lot of ex-WPIAL wrestlers ranked. None of Pitt's freshman are ranked.
This is Peters' third year. Ho took over a team which went undefeated in its first ACC season in dual meets. If Intermat is accurate, the only ACC dual meet we might win will be Duke. Based on individual rankings, we might not win a bout against VT. The sad performance against Lehigh seems to indicate Intermat is right on the mark.
